And today I got The Romance of Heraldry by C. W. Scott-Giles published in 1929 and reprinted in 1940.

What did Heim have to say about the "M"?  (quick version—Reader’s Digest, not the whole text)

It was OK because certain national systems of heraldry (including Swiss, which Heim was and Polish which John Paul II was) used letters and "house markings" as heraldic charges regularly. So, while letters are still generally bad heraldic charges some allowances have to be made based on the country of origin.

Makes sense, so long as it doesn’t become a popular fad!

Thanks!!

Today I got a belated birthday present in the form of Osem Storočí Slovenskej Heraldiky published by the Publishing House of the Matica slovenská in 2003. It is by Ladislav Vrtel, a herald from the Slovak Republic. The title translates to "Eight Centuries of Slovak Heraldry".

This one I bought myself a couple of years ago. Quite nice pictures and as I don’t read Slovakian, I was thankful for the short Resumes in English that accompanies every Chapter.

Two are in English of the 1978 edition. One is in English in the expanded 1979 edition. One is in Italian. One is in Dutch. I also own a copy of Heim’s original book, Customs and Rights of Heraldry in the Catholic Church in French.

I obtained some others in recent months and another one in English came today so now my total is eight copies of this book.
