I am considering designing a banner based on my arms. Since Steven Harris posted his, I have been inspired.

Here’s a question for those who have more experience than I in the area of heraldic flags. My arms are blazoned Sable, fretty Argent, in every interstice a cross pattee-arrondie Or. What degree of latitude do you think I have in translating that into a flag—what I mean is, how many frets do you think I can include? Something to illustrate what I mean:

You might say I’ve been fretting about it (:cool:).

I agree that your third option is the best.  I look forward to seeing it on a flag.

The last option makes clearer—especially in a light wind or when the banner is hanging stationary—that the shield is fretty and not just a single fret.

That third option. Hmmm. I wish you could get the crosses to bleed off the top and bottom the way they do at the left and right. (Sort of like on your shield.) Otherwise, seems like a lot of white at the top, bottom and corners.

I know what you mean… this is the closest I can get it, without redrawing my SVG file from the ground up (although that might be an option…)

I really like this 4th version of the banner. Please share any final product.

Fourth option is definitely solid

It’s all a matter of taste.  My initial personal preference was the first one—easiest to see/identify at a distance—but I can see Joe’s concern that it might be mistaken for a single fret; so will defer to the group’s opinion favoring #4.

However, for a table flag (stiff paper on a stick) FWIW I’d still prefer #1, but any of them would do.  Again FWIW, if you were designing a fabric for drapes or upholstery, I think #2 would be quite nice.

May I state that your arms are truly beautiful. I am certain that your banner will be so also whatever the final choice may be.
