The world of online heraldry in 2014 feels a bit like a decrepit fleet of ghost ships. Yikes.

Perhaps one good reason to support government registration of arms?

Against the many reasons not to.

I don’t think there’s any intrinsic reason why a private on-line registry can’t work.  The problem isn’t on-line vs. not, or public vs. private sector, it’s a matter of organization, staffing, and long-term commitment.

Agreed.

For some odd reason, I can’t help thinking of the mothball fleet rusting away east of San Francisco Bay - hardly an exemplar of governmental preservation of national heritage.

Ah well, for better or worse the chances of achieving governmental registration, beyond the limited heraldic utility of copyright or registering insignia of a family association, are too faint to spend too much time worrying about.  One might wish it were otherwise (I’m of two minds…) but what is, is.

As others have said: bringing the gov’t into it isn’t a guarantee of efficiency (perhaps quite the contrary). Nor do I think heraldry should be funded by taxpayers who have zero interest in it. I’d be fine with nothing more than the broadening of laws governing copyright or personal identity protection to include personal marks, including arms.

As for the private side of things, just a bit more effort on the technological and organizational side of things, especially from those who accept money, would be good enough.

The IAAH is not a registration service, although they do have an armorial of members and Designs they’ve done.

As to the application system, your application was received on the 18th by the IAAH.  It is under review of the board.  Membership is not necessarily immediate.

As to the e-mail, the IAAH had to move their web page and are in process getting e-mail addresses and such straightened out.

If you have something specific, you’re welcome to IM me here and I’ll relay it to the board.

Add me to the list of volunteer data entry people.

I did hear back from IAAH, though the process of contacting them was a little disorienting. Thank you for the offer.
