I am designing arms for a college friend.  He has settled on sable, or, and azure for his color scheme – but he has in mind to use somewhat unconventional shades of these colors in his emblazonment.

I know that the use of shades are left to the desire of the artist/armiger as long as they are unmistakable for their respective tincture.  Would you consider these shades to be an acceptable interpretation of sable, or, and azure?

I would consider them acceptable, there are no other heraldic tinctures that they could be confused with. It’s possible, depending on the color as displayed, whether it be a printout, or a monitor, painting, or some other medium, that the or may be confused with orange. But it looks or to me.

The blue and gold look conventional enough to me, and sable is often rendered dark gray to allow contrast with black shading, detail, etc.  So, yeah, seems okay to me.

My hunch, though, is that if he really gets into heraldry he’ll later opt for a more traditional rendition…

On all the screens that I’ve viewed it, the blue looks a bit too grey for my taste. In fact doing a conversion from the RGB 84:109:142, the nearest Pantone C colour to it appears to be "Cool Grey 10".

I have the same RGB for the Azure.  My color palette identifies these shades as:

• Sable – Charcoal #464646

• Or – Amber #FFC20E

• Azure – Kashmir Blue #546D8E

I think the azure looks too much like a lighter shade of grey and can easily be confused for sable.  There needs to be a tad bit more white and blue thrown into the mix.

That is the shade of blue that makes me immediately think of…

...which I assume, knowing Steven’s alma mater, is what the potential armiger is thinking of as well.

Nah!  The Infantry Cord has more blue in it .... "Infantry Blue".

My old Alma Mater as well: "Benning’s School for Boys."

Rather than grey Sable to allow for darker black for internal lines, shading etc., why not a dark black Sable with any internal lines in white (or yellow, whichever is the field color)?

It’s all artistic license of course, but IMO while interior lines on a dark black charge are much clearer visually - and thus IMO "better" - than black lines on grey.  Heraldically no different, but artististically better since more visible, especially in smal scale or at a distance (the postage stamp & flag-across-a-field tests)
