Hi,

An "extremely distant" family member has been told part of the family "line" is Tipton and the Great Grandmother was Olivia Stevens Tipton.  They are currently looking into the genealogy and contacting others, but the Grandmother was given the COA seen here as their Coat of Arms. (about mid page)

I’m not finding citations of the actual grant (if there was one)—If anyone can help out, identifying, validating or debunking these arms.. greatly appreciated.

According to St. John Hope’s Grammar of English Heraldry, the earliest documented private grants of arms were in the mid-1300s and the earliest royal grants around 1390.  So the legend of Anthony Tipton being knighted and granted a coat of arms in 1282 is just that, a legend, just like most similar stories.

As I’m sure you’ve found already, no arms of anyone of this name even appear in Burke’s, and while I found a Tipton family in the 1623 visitation of Shropshire, no arms were given.

Yeah, I didn’t see it in Burkes, or Croziers or NEGHS book… Figures a visitation without arms.. I tired some other possible spellings no joy…

It appears that the emblazonment in the link may be erroneous in the detail.  Here is an embossment which appears to be a more detailed rendering of the arms:

The crest now makes sense, although I still can’t make out what the charges are…

I found the webpage here:

http://www.firstimpressionfse.com/First_Impression_-_Detail_Family_Crest.html

after googling "Tipton coat of arms".

I suspect that they were provided a much clearer emblazonment that might assist in your search.  It might be helpful to contact them.
