At the risk of being branded a troublemaker as I wait for my membership to be finalized, I present to following:

As I create my arms, I was sketching out different ideas and experimenting with variations and was struck by the per chief embowed and per fess embowed abased (I don’t know if those terms are correct) used together at the same time.

I thought that just for the purpose of brainstorming and letting the creative process work, I would flesh it out. What I came up with was this ridiculous thing that I call the eyescutcheon. It’s so un-heraldic that I don’t think it deserves to even be looked at by anyone with any real interest in heraldry, so naturally I wanted to show it off! wink

Dear Mr. McMillan,

Your submission has been declined by contest officials. There’s clearly a lozenge, 2 roundels, an umpteen pointed star and some sort of chief/fess or something combo. Please re-word your answer and resubmit for further denial.

:D

Ah, but see Kenneth Mansfield’s correspondence with the College of Arms regarding blazoning his arms.  The considered judgment of the experts is that the blazon should reflect what the the arms look like and are supposed to be.  Are you saying this isn’t supposed to be an eye?

Reminds me of the arms of the Italian family of Bussi…here are the arms of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Bussi (1656–1726) from his tomb in Rome:

Here are the arms of Papirio Bussi (d. 1619) with a chief of the the Military Order of Saint Stephen:

That’s just creepy. How would you like that hanging in your guest bathroom?

Well, you seem to have expertly painted me into a corner. I did say it should look like an eye, didn’t I.  But! But, I didn’t say it was supposed to be an eye! Besides, there are lots of symbolism in heraldry of things that represent, and look like what they’re supposed to represent, but aren’t blazoned as such. Barry wavy comes to mind, or any wavy bar that represents water. It isn’t blazoned "water". I believe that John Barcow’s tennis balls are blazoned as roundels Or, although I couldn’t find the actual blazon.

But hey, let’s not muddy the water with facts and logic. Let’s just follow the instructions. Can you blazon it as it looks? If you must, lets say that the Lozenge represents my love of baseball, and the roundel sable on a umpteen pointed star represents a garden weasel to remember and honor my late mothers time spent working in her garden. The blue is infantry blue.  The rest is just aesthetically pleasing.

So where was I? Oh yeah. Strike 2!! As per the rules clearly laid out in my head (that i just made up), you have just two more strikes and you’re out. Be careful Mr. McMillan.
