No, this is not a metal on metal problem. It’s no different heraldically than two swords in saltire Argent, or anchors in saltire Sable, or any number of other similar arrangements.
The gold items presumably will be on a dark field (color, not metal) so I don’t see a tincture violation anymore than charges, metal or color, overlapping both halves of a parted field of metal and color. Not ideal, but technically OK. Others may disagree.
Why not the cello Proper? I’ve never seen a gold one!

The client wanted all gold. The instruments should also be blazoned as "Keyed Argent", right?

If you want the keys to be silver, then yes. It’s probably within artistic license to make the keys silver regardless, but if it’s important you’ll want to specify it. Of course that then invites specifying the tincture of the cello strings, etc, as well.
If it’s important that the keys be Argent anytime the arms are emblazoned, then yes. If it’s just something that can be left to artistic license, then no.
It would be intèresting to see the whole design ,if you & the client are OK with that.

Sorry, but in my opinion this is "too many notes, my dear Mozart." The "musical trophy" is distinctive enough that it doesn’t need the op-art background. If you don’t want it solid, I would suggest Gules five barrulets Argent, as an allusion to the musical staff, with a larger version of the trophy overall.
Thanks for your comments. I think your 5 barrulets for the staff is a wonderful idea. I find this to be a learning process and appreciate other views.

Ditto Joe - too much of a good thing!
Best would IMO be a single color field, e.g. Gules; second best, a parted field of two colors, e.g. per pale (or per fess or even per saltire) Gules and Sable; third choice, a simple parting of metal and color, e.g. Joe’s suggestion, that doesn’t visually swallow the trophy.
See the New Entries link on the USHR website - the entry at the top of the list (the newest, as of today, for Clark, with blazon but not emblazoned) appears to be the paly of six Argent and Gules, countercharged per saltire etc. version emblazoned above.
