That might be about right.

A wonderful approach, indeed, but is there a plan to go about accomplishing this, or is this simply academic?  I, for one, would love to see this to fruition…

Perhaps the AHS could offer a diploma, much like the Heraldry Society offers.  Of course, we would be taking on a new level of authority that comes with more responsibility than the AHS may want. I have no idea. If an organization is going to slip into the private-non-governmental role as a US heraldic authority or accreditation service - who is it going to be?

Charles Drake wrote: There is a list of Americans with grants of arms published in Vol. 90 (1967) of the Annuaire de la Noblesse de France. The list includes grants by the COA, Lyon, and Dublin Castle. Unfortunately they do not contain the blazon, and many are not dated. Skimming the list, however, turns up the following by the COA which are somewhat early, but after Independence. It is also not possible to tell the citizenship of the grantees, but the inference is they many were Americans.

Cortland Skinner of New Jersey 1807

James Putnam of Massachusetts 1803

Ebenezer Jessup of London and America 1788

A transcription of Colonel Jessup’s grant can be found in Edward Jessup of West Farms, Westchester Co., New York, and His Descendants:
Quote:

To All and Singular to whom these presents shall come, Sir Isaac Heard, Knight, Garter Principal King of Arms, and Thomas Lock, Esquire, Clarenceux King of Arms of the South, East, and West Parts of England, from the River Trent Southward, send Greeting: Whereas Ebenezer Jessup, of Hudyer Street in the Parish of St. Margaret, Westminster, Esqr., late Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the King’s Loyal American Regiment, third son of Joseph Jessup of Fairfield in the Province of Connecticut in North America, by Abigail his wife, daughter of Henry James of the said Province, but originally from Wales, and grandson of Edward Jessup by Elizabeth his wife, daughter and heir of John Hyde, Esquire, of the said Province, hath represented unto the Most Noble Charles, Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshall and hereditary Marshal of England, that his Family have been for several generations established in North America and have used similar Arms to those of the Family of Jessup of the County of York, from which, according to tradition, they have descended, but being, from the circumstance of their early migration and long residence in America and the unfortunate loss of his family papers, unable at this time without great difficulty and trouble to prove his connection, he requested the favor of his Grace’s Warrant for our confirming and exemplifying the said Arms with such variation as may be necessary, quartered with those of Hyde in memory of his said Grandmother Elizabeth Hyde, to be borne by him and his descendants and the descendants of his said Father, Joseph Jessup, deceased, according to the laws of Arms. And forasmuch as the said Earl Marshal did by warrant under his hand and seal bearing date the eighteenth day of March last authorize and direct us to confirm and exemplify such Armorial Ensigns, accordingly Know Ye therefore that We the said Garter and Clarenceux in pursuance of the consent of the said Earl Marshal and by virtue of the letters patent of our several offices to each of us respectively granted under the Great Seal of Great Britain, do by these Presents confirm, exemplify, and grant to the said Ebenezer Jessup the Arms following, that is to say: — Quarterly, First and Fourth, Barry of Six Azure and Argent, nine Mullets pierced Or, three, three and three for Jessup ; Second and Third, Gules a Chevron Erminois between three Lozenges Or, on a Canton Argent a sword erect proper for Hyde, and for the Crest of Jessup on a Wreath of the colours, in a Maunch Sable charged with three mullets pierced Or, a dexter arm, the hand grasping a sword proper, pomel and hilt gold, to be borne and used for ever hereafter by him, the said Ebenezer Jessup and his descendants, and by those of his said father Joseph Jessup, with due and proper differences according to the laws of Arms without the let or interruption of any person or persons whatsoever. In witness wherof We the said Garter and Clarenceux Kings of Arms, have to these presents subscribed our names and affixed the seal of our several Offices this tenth day of April, in the twenty-eighth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c., and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight.

According to the LP, Ebenezer was the third son of Joseph Jessup of Fairfield, Connecticut.  I wonder if any of Ebenezer’s brothers were patriots and/or remained in Connecticut after independence (since the grant applied to them too).  No word if Colonel Jessup’s motto was "you can’t handle the truth" :D

If I am reading the Jessup book correctly, Ebenezer’s brother Edward (also a Loyalist) had a great-grandson John Hamilton Jessup (b. 1843 in Canada) who was a planter in Virginia on the James River and later resided in Baltimore and Florida.  So I guess at least one heir of this grant ended up in the USA.  It would be interesting to learn if any other male-line descendants of Joseph Jessup still live in America (although according to the Jessup book John Hamilton was unmarried as of 1883):https://archive.org/stream/edwardjessupofwe00jesu#page/266/mode/1up
