The Noblity of Sweden now only exists as a private corporation. Heraldicly the Nobility still has some particular traits. The various classes Counts, Barons and Noblemen has Heraldic symbols not to be used by commoners. Counts (Grevar in Swedish) are distinguished by placing three helmets crowned by Countly Crowns and are allowed Supporters. The are some exeptions from this the Counts Lewenhaupt for instance uses 8 helmets but no Supporters.

Barons (Friherrar in Swedish) uses a large baronial Crown flanked by two helmets crowned by lesser baronial Crowns. Barons are also allowed Supporters.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your post!  I’ve seen a few examples where an untitled Swedish nobleman or his descendants might later be raised to the rank of baron or count, and their arms are augmented with additional crest(s) and a coronet (and sometimes extra quarters and supporters).  I’ve also read that sometimes in Swedish history a person may have been made a baron or a count by the sovereign, but for one reason or another not introduced to the Riddarhuset.  Do you know how these barons or counts may have displayed their arms?

For example, in my research I’ve looked at Johan von Becker who was confirmed(?) as an untitled nobleman in 1653 by Queen Christina and, two years later, was introduced to the Riddarhuset (https://www.adelsvapen.com/genealogi/Von_Becker_nr_642).

Here is a picture of his sköldebrev from 1653: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cljhpq2z3go308c/skoldebrev small.jpg?dl=0

And here is a picture of his arms that still hang in the Riddarhuset: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7j5e2jetx4nhmwx/coatofarms.jpg?dl=0

One of his sons, Johan Wilhelm von Becker, was apparently made a baron.  According to the above website, Johan Wilhelm was made a baron on 1720-03-02, but not introduced to the Riddarhuset.  I’m not sure why, but from what little I know about Swedish history the date 1720-03-02 fell after Queen Ulrika Eleonora abdicated on 29 February 1720, but before King Frederick I succeeded her on the throne on 24 March 1720.  Perhaps that had something to do with it (one wonders who had the power to create a baron during this short window of time)?

Anyway, I’ve never been able to find evidence that Friherre von Becker of his descendants used a second crest, supporters or any extra quarters.  Would such a baron still have used a baronial coronet, either above his shield or on his helm?

Many thanks!

Apologies if already answered, but what are the two more-or-less vertical charges in chief?

Michael, if you are referring to the arms of von Becker, I think they are bear’s paws.

Hi Sebastian, well the reasons why a person didn’t get introduced at the Riddarhuset are many. One big issue is payment, upon introduction a fee was to be payed. If the means was lacking one went unitroduced or was introduced at a later time, when means was at hand. A person could die before the introduction fee was payed, quite a risk in the constant Wars Sweden was engaged in the 17th Century.

Or as for the Beckers thier title of Baron seems to have got lost during the Abdication of Queen Ulrika Eleonora. I’am not that familiar with the Swedish Constitution at the time to exactly know which person if any would have had the power to create a Baron during the time of the Queen’s abdication and the enthornement of Fredrik I. But there would have been a Regent appointed I guess. The matter would however take some further Archival studies to find out.

As for the Heraldry, I have looked in the Armorial of the Association of Un-Introduced Nobility, there they use the appropriate rank insignia. But then one should hold in mind that many of their members hold foreign titles.

Armorial bearings of the Explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld raised to the rank of Baron following the successful Vega Expedition 1878-1880, that navigated the North East Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (Sailing around the northern coast of Russia).

The Commander of the Ship Vega which made that memorable journey, Lieutenant Louis Palander was enobled taking the name Palander af Vega. His Arms rather unimaginative but of cause understandable showed the Ship Vega and the Motto Framåt! (= Forward!).
