My mother’s family did some genealogy a couple of years ago, and they turned up that my 10th-great-grandfather was Richard Duke (from Devonshire, England).
Duke arrived in America in 1634 with Lord Baltimore aboard ‘The Ark’, serving as Rev Fr Andrew White’s private secretary, later advisor to Gov Leonard Calvert, Assamblyman 1637-1653, returned to England
I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, but I just dug out the trusty Burke’s “General Armory” and there does appear to be a few armigerous Duke from the right time period, one even being listed a Richard. Now I just have to find out if any of them is MY Richard Duke.
I have no idea what, if anything I could or would do with this information, but why not find out anyway? Right?
There is a Duke family with a couple of Richards in the pedigree in the 1620 visitation of Devonshire, one of them born about 1600. "Per fess Argent and Azure three chaplets counterchanged." Not proof, but a lead, anyway.

Very interesting!
I do not have birth or death dates for Richard, but if he came with Lord Baltimore and Fr White in 1634, then it is conceivable that he is the same Richard here who was 20 years of age at the 1620 visitation. 34 seems like a good age to go galavanting off to the New World.
I am descended from Richard’s son James Duke, who died c.1672
Is this the Duke line that founded (endowed?) Duke University in Durham, NC? IIRC under the terms of the endowment, descendants of the founder are entitled to free tuition at the school. Don’t know if this includes collateral descent or only direct descent.
If this line does pan out - meaning that I am in fact directly descendant from the Dukes who were granted "Per fess Argent and Azure three chaplets counterchanged" - would it be appropriate to add a quartering to my arms?
Who knows, maybe more armigers will fall out of the family tree if I hit it hard enough

Is your mother a heraldic heiress of this Duke line? If not, my vote is no.
