Today is the 31st birthday of the Crownprincess Victoria of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland. And here is her Arms from the Order of the Seraphim Stall Plate. The Crown on the shield is one perculiar to the Heir of the Throne (Crownprincess/Crownprince). In the third Quarter the Arms of Västergötland corresponding to the title of Duchess of Västergötland. Only members of the Royal Family is awarded Titular Duchies. The Great Swedish Statesman Axel Oxenstierna Lord High Chanchellor 1612 until his death in 1654 was offered a Duchy but declined.
The Stall Plate was painted by Bengt Olof Kälde in 1995, when the Crownprincess recieved the Insigna of the Order on her Coming of Age.
Is that shield shape characteristically Swedish?
I don’t think it is typical Swedish. Some artists use this form for Women’s Arms.
I noticed that the crownprincess is just styled - and addressed - "Kronprinsessan (Victoria)".
Was the title "arvfurste" ("hereditary prince") abandoned - or is it just dormant, because there is no tradition for heir apparent to the throne to be an "arvfurstinna" (hereditary princess)....?
The title Crownprincess/Crownprince is reserved for the person who is first inline of succesion. The person who is second in succession directly after the Crownprincess/Crownprince can use the title Arvfurste/-furstinna. So the two is not the same. The Brother of the Crownprincess, HRH Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, who was Crownprince before the succession law was changed to allow the firstborn child of the monarch disregarding the gender to inherit the throne, was known as Arvfurste when he was placed second in the line of succession. This was however later droped and today he is "only" Prince of Sweden and Duke of Värmland.
Hej Markus,
tack för förklaringen.
I thought that "arvfurste" and "crownprince" were equivalent - which is, as it appears, obviously wrong.
Tack igen
Jochen
Glad to be of assistance Jochen!
It can be a bit tricky with titles of different countries.
There is no tradition of special shields for women in swedish heraldry. Bengt Olof Kälde do however often paint arms of women with this special kind of shield. To me it looks very much like a superellipse, wich would be a very clever use of such a shape.
The title "arvfuste" is (or was) commonly used as a title for a prince who is close to the throne in the line of succession. In Sweden however, all male members of the royal house, with the exception of the king and the eldest son of the king, used this title. They were not "prins av Sverige" (Prince of Sweden) but "Sveriges arvfurste". The title "prins" was however also used, but only in connection whith the name of the person. A male member of the royal house was thus styled as "Prins N.N. Sveriges arvfurste" (approximately Prince N.N., Hereditary Prince of Sweden). The eldest son of the king used the title "kronprins" (Crown Prince).
The title "arvfurste" was first used by the sons of king Gustav I (1523-1560). It was dropped in 1982 when the title was changed to "prins av Sverige". The last two princes to hold the title of "arvfurste" was Prince Bertil (1912-1997) and Prince Carl Philip (1979-). The reasons behind the change is not known to me. May be "arvfurste" was thought to be an incomprehensible title in the current society.
It now appears to me that the change of titles propably had to do with two things: the change of the order of succession to full cognatic primogeniture and the birth of Princess Madeleine.
The swedish order of succession was altered in 1980. Princess Victoria then became Crown Princess and Crown Prince Carl Philip (born in 1979) became a prince whith the title "Sveriges arvfurste". In 1982 princess Madeleine was born. In the time of agnatic order of succession, she would have been given the title "Sveriges prinsessa" (Princess of Sweden). As she now had a right of succession like her brother, it was probably held that she also should have titles corresponding to her brother’s titles. I don’t know why the change was made in the way it was, but this was propably the "ignition" to the reformation of the swedish princely titles in 1982.
Thanks Jcb, the birth of princess Madeleine probably was the reason for the title change.
