this thread is intended to illustrate the works of wonderful artists who’ve done an emblazonment of my arms.

this first one was done by Kenneth several weeks ago now and i’m only just now getting it up for view…though you should be able to see it as my avatar.

i really like how Kenneth uses space in his emblazons. i know it’s digital and some could argue it’s easy to do that with digital media, but we’ve all seen lots of digital emblazonments that don’t use good spacial relationships in them. and Kenneth’s do have good spacial relationship.

i also like how Kenneth places green as the backside of the motto scroll. imo this is a nice complimentary color to the Sable and Or of the shield and hits on the Irish High Cross in my crest.

thanks again Kenneth!

this second one is from my friend Ce. Ce’s a great abstract artist (and an American to boot!) and is starting to paint heraldry as well.

as far as i know, this is the second shield she’s painted. i may be wrong on that and i leave that to Ce, Andy or Kathy or anyone else who knows better to corect me.

she shared this on another MB and i just fell in love with it. i love the very "Irish" feel of this emablazon. right away i noticed the Irish swirling movement with all the diapering and the style of the hand, horse head, and cross to be very "Irish" in its appearance. i also love how she’s capped my tower giving it both a traditional heraldic tower look and the Irish Round Tower look at the same time.

now, i had missed it until she pointed it out (a real Homer Simpson "D’oh!" moment for me!) but the swirls, which i mentioned above have a very "Irish" feel about them are also a ‘G’! very clever imo.

unless i’m mistaken this is painted in watercolor and as such has a nice soft feel about it.

thank you very much Ce!

my blazon for these arms is:

Arms: Quarterly Sable and Or; 1, a horse head erased crowned with an ancient Irish crown; 2, a tower; 3, a cross bottony; 4, a dexter hand couped apaume; all counterchanged.

Crest: Issuant from an ancient Irish crown Or, a naked dexter arm embowed Proper, the hand grasping the stem of an Irish High Cross Vert.

Motto: SAOIRSE! (above); SO BE IT! (below)

Badge: 1, on a Guze, a St. Brigid’s Cross Argent (a nod to my Irish-Catholic faith; 2, within a horseshoe reversed (upside down) Argent, a fleur-de-lis Azure (a nod to my devotion to Our Lady, the BVM and to my family); 3, placed on an artist’s painting canvas Argent, a wooden baseball bat in pale Sable, surmounted by an artist’s paintbrush in fess Brunatre, the hairs of the head to the dexter Sable, dipped in Gules, surmounted by a basketball, surmounted by an American football, surmounted by a baseball Proper (as a nod to my life as an artist and coach).

and before anyone asks the mantling is Gules, doubled Argent because that’s still the default of the CHoI office (one of the cases where Irish heraldry still clings to the very English practices; this is an interesting situation in Irish heraldry, which is at the same time can be ‘more English than the English’ and in the next isntant counter-English in every possible way, which is a lot like the whole of the Irish life itself, but that’s a discussion for a different day). i like it this way. but i also like it with the color/metal of the shield. i don’t mandate artists do it either way and i leave it up to them. in the past artists have painted them both ways. it’s just this is the way i’ve painted them in the past when doing my arms and i think how most people paint my mantling when they emblazon my arms because of that. again, i’m cool with it either way.

as to the "ancient Irish crown" i’ve painted, i used the one that was in the crest of Armagh as my basic source and i did so for two reasons; one, i was advised by the CHoI that though they didn’t paint them that this pattern they used was based on a actual ancient Irish crown found and displayed; and two, my father’s family comes from Armagh, County Armagh, Ireland. so it had that meaning. however, i never tell an artist it has to be exactly that one. heck i’d be happy if they made up an ancient Irish crown based on their own imagination, or, off of some other old crowns found in Ireland, or some other Celtic land, or some combination of all of the above. it really matters not to me. also, something Mr. O’Comain once told me was that it was the position of the CHoI to place a crest coronet within a wreath, unless asked by the client not to, which i see a lot of in Canadian heraldry as well as some continental heraldry (Italian comes to mind). i don’t care either way as it’s merely meant to bring the coronet on the horse’s head into the crest and has no nobiliary significance whatsoever. one artist whom i’ve commissioned lately (a month ago) told me he was going to paint it within a wreath. i told him that’s fine with me.

i really look forward to seeing all the diferent interpretations of my arms in the coming months as i get these emblazons from these artists.

Coach, thanks for posting these.  I always love Kenneth’s designs.  Everything is so clean and pleasing to the eye.  And as for Ce’s design, well that is a nice surprise.  I love the diapering that she did on the shield.  And I really like her take of the horse’s head (which to me, resembles the knight piece from the chess set) and the way the tower is drawn.  It’s a little different from other towers I’ve seen yet still instantly recognizable.

I can’t wait to see other depictions of your arms.

This is fun!—it’s like apple pie or fried chicken—even with the same recipe, no two cooks make it the same!  (you can tell I’m late for dinner…)

this is my latest addition. it’s an emblazonment from Ronny. an excellent piece! i’ve always loved his clean, clear emblazons with their vivid color and now i have one of my own! so much about this piece to enjoy. my most favorite part, however, is the way the mantling moves and frames the shield. if you look at the irish high cross in the crest and follow it down the arm and into the helm and manlting and allow yourself to be brought into the shield you’ll see what i’m talking about. just fantastic!

These are a treat and a pleasure to view! A little like the thrill of opening Christmas presents when you have an idea what could be inside, but aren’t quite sure.

Thanks for sharing and hopefully there are more to come.

thanks Ton and Richard. there’s more to come. i have a couple bookplates in the works as well as after Christmas i am committing to getting pieces by Andy, Xavier, Carlos Navarro, Michael as well as two Americans who contribute here (maybe 3). i just have to save up some more money now that Christmas shopping is upon us (yes, i admit i’m one of those who spends way too much during this season…but…at least it’s for my mom, brother, sister, their spouses, my 10 nephews and nieces, etc…and not me) i am seeing my money go out the window faster than normal! smile we’ll see though…baby steps.

this one was done by Brian Jeffs. it’s great. i agree with others on another forum who said this was great because of the treatment of the helm. smile

the hard copy of the piece that Ronny painted came in the mail yesterday ... and man, oh, man! what a treat!

as with all had-painted art, the images we get of pics of them never do them justice. it is excellent! such clean lines and wonderful balance and virbant colors and movement within the mantling ... i wish i could share it with everyone, but i can’t share the real thing only a pic of it, which i did above.

great work Ronny! thanks!! smile

I’m glad it arrived safely - and that you like the original. And I agree; there’s nothing better than to see an oginal piece of art for yourself.

Best,

Ronny
