Hi David. I have the reply back from Mr. O Comain. I am sorry it took so long to get from him. He has been out of the office there a lot this year he says.

Anyway, he confirms what I said above, but does mention that he can only think of a few examples of it.

Here is a copy of the email exchange between he and I on it. I have removed his email and mine only, otherwise this is an intact email correspondence. I hope this helps in understanding my point on Ermine as a lining when there is no metal on the shield in Irish achievements.

As to the versions that showed this on the CHoI website, I will keep trying to dig to see which ones they were, but it is frustrating as a lot of those arms links there have since been removed there leaving only the typed name.

I will say that I am very appreciative of their responses to me over the past couple of years. They have been very nice and patient with a rather impatient American-Irishman.

As a side note, I do love the additions some time ago of the arms and crests granted from 1936 to 1980 I believe on the CHoI’s website it is a fine example of both great heraldry and fine art.

Thank you very much Dennis for following up on this question with an authority on modern Irish practice. It would seem to me the use of an ermine lining instead of a metal lining would be quite rare. It would however be interesting to know what the Irish heralds would do with arms blazoned Ermine, a fess Argent with no tincture so to speak.

Forgive my ignorance, but you quote the authority of Mr. O Comain. From the debate it can be inferred that he works in the office of the Irish Heraldic Authority. Is this correct?

hi eric. yes he does. in fact he is the guy wearing the ‘irish tabbard’ at the last meeting in scotland that we all seen pics of. nice fella.

david and joe…that is an interesting question. what would one do? the only three possibilites i can think of are: 1) use sable from the tail of the ermine as your color to go with ermine; 2) sable form the tail of the ermine to go with silver; 3) use ermine and silver (not my favorite choice)

yeah it seems rare. i don’t see ermine a lot at their website in the renditions available to the public. i suspect it is rare in general and even then it is likely in combination with a metal and color. of the 200 or so very popular irish arms i can only think of Joyce and O’Reagan off of the top of my head that even has ermine and there it is in combination with metal and color. there might be mroe…i’d have to check.
