Well .... I was just Image-Googling "armorial" and found an image that led me to Marie Lynskey.  I must say she is quite skilled.  She is the author of five books (see here)—and the one about how to lay out genealogies/family trees really looks interesting to me:

Guy,

Joe Macmillan has an excellent emblazonment by Marie Lynskey in the Members’ Arms section. Here.

Thanks for the reference to her books. I wasn’t aware she was also an accomplished author. smile

Regards.

Hi Carl,

I remember Joe mentioning his new emblazon and saw it earler—although I really liked the artwork, I didn’t pay attention to the name of the artist.  Silly me!

Thanks for the reminder.

I joined this Forum not so long time ago and I’m still unearthing some old threads. .

Marie’s homepage is active and it was a pleasure to see the variety of work done by her ,specially knowing that she is one of many successful artists who graduated from Reigate School of Art and Design .Just regret that some of her books are out of print .

The link given to Members’ Arms section is broken ,so my little question to Joseph is where his arms painted by Marie Lynskey can be seen ?

Anna,

It’s in the members’ armorial, http://www.americanheraldry.org/pages/uploads/Armorial/McMillan_ahs_l4.jpg

(I also repaired the link in Guy’s post; it had the file name from before the decision to put watermarks on the images in the members’ armorial.)

Thank you Joseph . Even if I’ve seen this rendering of your arms in the armorial I wouldn’t know who the artist is ...they are not mentioned there.

I got used to see your bright gold shield placed against the tartan which is an excellent combination but this emblazonment is very elegant and it’s a first time I see the crest ...how do you blazon it ?

Thank you.  The crest is "From a wreath of the colors, a dexter hand proper brandishing a Creek Indian atassa, or war club, Gules."  The atassa, which was made out of hard wood such as ash or hickory, existed both with and without a spherical or egg-shaped knob on the back side of the blade.  My other emblazonments show it without, but this is easily mistaken for a scimitar or falchion, and Ms. Lynskey elected to show it with the ball.

Once or twice corrected by Fr.Guy I was about to call it a seaxe ...blood dripping seaxe smile but now I know it’s the atassa! Artistic interpretation of the blazon can be sometimes tricky.

Sorry,I didn’t know that every member of the Society has not only his arms in the gallery but also his own page.

Marie and I were in the same class at Reigate along with Manda Hanson, Sue Chittenden and Mary Bilson. Sadly I think we are the only two to have made it this far. It was a talented class all round and Manda Hanson was a very gifted artist and scribe, her work is in Von Volborth’s ‘Art of Heraldry’ she and I got the highest grades in the class and she went on to become Donald Jackson’s assistant. Donald is considered to be the world’s leading scribe and he is a Queen’s Scribe. Marie and I went on to the College of Arms for a while, she worked for the late Peter Spurrier himself a gifted heraldic artist in his own right and I worked for Sir Conrad Swan. We also had a part timer in our class called Beryl, she had been trained at the Royal Acadamy and she was a perfectionist, once spending several months on one heraldic painting working on a briar rose compartment that equalled anything a Pre raphaelite could have done. She sadly ended up as a domestic cleaner and died a few years after leaving Reigate.

The question to the Master ...how many official scribes and calligraphers to the Crown Office HM Queen Elisabeth II has ?

I was interested in Donald Jackson’s work because of his monumental work on ‘The Saint John’s Bible’ what was advertised as ‘celebration of the tradition of medieval manuscripts’ and at some point I must say ...I was disappointed….

I agree. The one significant reservation I have is the orientation of the helmet in 3/4 view; my crest looks more natural on a helm in profile, I think.

I would agree with that.
