I’ve been presented with a lengthy motto.
English:
Character through tribulations. Prosperity through perseverance. Love through trust.
but in Latin it becomes:
Moribus per tribulationes et prosperitate per labores adeptis, amo quos cognoverim esse fideles.
I’m curious to other examples of lengthy mottoes out there and how the artists worked them into the designs.
Faced with this situation, I dispense with a scroll and would probably just circle the armorial with the text. Btw, the Latin could be more concise and it could be closer to the English.
That seems more like three mottos than it does one.
"Character through Tribulations"
"Prosperity through Perseverance"
"Love through Trust"
He could put one below the shield, and one above the crest (Scottish-style). I don’t know about the third.
He could just focus on the possitive and assume a hendiatris:
"Character · Prosperity · Love"
Or he could try not to encompass all the wisdom of the ages in a heraldic motto.

I told him the same thing about being three seperate mottoes. I gave him a list of suggestions that follow along the lines of what he requested and nudge towards keeping it short and sweet. The nice thing is, he is excited about having a legit coat of arms, so i blame his desire for having a manuscript. From my end I know that lenghty mottoes are rare, so i wanted to see they have been handled artistically over the years. (Im on my phone so pardon my typos)
After discussion the issue with him, I think I may have managed to get it down to
"Through Adversity" (Per Ardua) or "Through adversity comes resolution" (Per ardua invenimus constantia)
Per Ardua (“through adversity”) is fine. For “through adversity comes resolution” I might suggest the form: Per Ardua Ad Cōnstantiam.
In The Art of Love, the Roman poet Ovid wrote: Ardua molimur; sed nulla nisi ardua virtus (“I attempt a difficult work; but there is no excellence without difficulty”).
He officially has settled on Per Ardua.

There isn’t a copyright on mottoes. That said, unless your life compares with that of David Copperfield, it seems a bit dramatic as a personal motto.
