Hey everybody!

Well, as a sort of sequel to my earlier post, I thought I would post some images of signet rings from Ancient Egypt. Some of them use the cartouche (name of Pharaoh on a special sort of frame, which I like to compare to a shield), as well as other symbols. It is very interesting how they are used in a very similar matter to heraldry. Keep in mind also, that the ancient Nomes (subdivisions) of Ancient Egypt each had a symbol that represented it, as well as being named after it, i.e The Falcon Nome, the Two Feathers Nome, the Sceptre Nome, and so on and so forth. I have an image of these from a book on flags which I hope to scan and post soon.

So here are the signets:

Some ancient Egyptian signet rings, and the impressions made from them. Doesn’t the design in the fourth one in the impressions look very heraldic??? I had a postcard once, of this ancient Egyptian piece of jewlery that looked astonishingly heraldic, I mean supporters, "shield", and crest, the whole nine-yards. (not saying that the ancient ones used heraldry in its modern sense, but that a system of personal symbols existed, almost akin to the Ka-Mon of Japan.).

Mohamed,

It is the nomes’ symbols/standards that were used on the provincial flags in Egypt in the 1940s.  The emblems were represented on cloth flags and those were adopted as the heraldic flags, one for each of Egypt’s provinces or governorates.

Cheers,

But what were the provinces of Egypt (pre-52)?? There are currently 27, but some of them were formed recently (such as division of Sinai, into North Sinai, and South Sinai), and some of them have new names such as Kafr el Shaikh, which IIRC, was first called Mudiriet Fouad Al Awal. I dunno how one can even compare the two names! wink Unfortunately, not all of the nomes correspond to the modern provinces of Egypt. It would be very interesting to see how these were depicted on flags. Were the charges used on plain backgrounds? If so, what color? (I think Green, but maybe it varied by province, similar to modern Sudanese provincial flags).

Were they only used as flags, or were they ever used as shields also?

Hope to hear some more on this fascinating topic.

Regards,

Mohamed,

1. Modern Egyptian provinces did not correspond one to one with ancient ones, but for the most part.

2. The current Sudanese and Egyptian provincial flags are simply ugly and have no heraldic correctness or tradition, if you ask me.  I really don’t even remeber what they look like post 1952.  They remind me of Soviet communist symbols of cogs and wheels…etc.  A child in kindergarten would put a much better design than what they came up with.

3. I have never heard of Fouad I province!

4. Yes, they were on livery color flags, usually one color and not even the majority of them were green. Vert is not the only color used in Egyptian heraldry, you know.

Aside from what I have already said and without the magazine in front of me, I really don’t recall any other details, sorry.
