Having decided to assume a badge (or really two badges: A cross flory Gules surmounted by an erased Bear’s head Argent and A cross flory Argent surmounted by an erased Bear’s head Gules), the question is what to do with it/them.

One thought I’ve had is to have a signet ring made with the badge, but is this done?

Claus,

See this post:

I’d also like to have a signet ring featuring my badge.  Although it seems to be the minority practice, the Prince of Wales’ signet ring features his badge.  Likewise, David Pritchard has the wax impression of his signet ring featuring his badge in his photo album.

Claus,

Generally badges are not for personal use as you have arms/crest for that.  Badges are for marking property, etc and, of course, in the medieval period and later one’s retainers or men at arms would have borne their lord’s badge on their clothing in order to note their allegiance both in civil life and on the field of battle.  So, one that would not ordinarily use a badge on a signet ring.

John,

Didn’t we learn from Chariots of Fire that the Prince of Wales exists so that the rest of us may know what may and may not be done?  Now I’m confused!

Slightly more seriously, isn’t it fair to say that the use of such quasi-armorial devices varies from time to time and place to place?  The French kings certainly used their devises for personal purposes (Louis XII’s porcupine, Francis I’s salamander, Henry II’s crescent,  Louis XIV’s sun), and the Italian imprese were obviously quite personal in nature.

Thank you all for your advice, still thinking about what to do.

In the meantime, I thought I might show you some sketches I’ve made (the bear’s head is drawn by Ronny Andersen).

Claus, these images shows the very reason why I think most badges would be quite good choices for a signet ring- the design is usually simpler than a crest, and more likely to better fill the space on the face of a signet ring.  This is one of the reasons that I’ve wanted to use my badge on a ring, instead of a crest or shield.

Joe,

You may will be correct.  But sad to say I cannot make a comment upon the Prince of Wales/Chariots of Fire as I have never seen the film.

As ever
