While researching, I came across a blazon which might be associated with the family in question. It has me completely baffled. From Sir Bernard Burke. The General Armory of England, Scotland, Wales; Comprising A Registry of Armorial Bearings From the Earliest To the Present Time. London, England: Harrison, 59, Pall Mall, 1884.

Azure three wedding favours, single bowed and ribbons pendent ppr. a chief Argent. Crest - Out of a foreign coronet of sixteen balls (nine visible), a greyhound’s head Argent collared and chained Or. Motto - Pour trois. Another, over the crest . A tôt bien estrainz.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Dear Richard,

The wedding favours as blazoned in the arms of Latter on page 587 of Burke’s General Armory (BGA) are depicted as a true lover’s knot.  An example of this type of knot is often shown ornamenting the lozenge of a spinster (an unmarried woman) in British heraldry.

It would appear the family of Latter used the arms as cited in BGA without authority as the family’s entry in Burke’s Landed Gentry (BLG) of 1937 on page 1328 gives their arms as follows:

Arms: Azure three wedding favours two and one single bowed argent on a chief of the last a terrestrial sphere proper

Crest: Out of a crown vallery or a greyhound’s head argent collared and chained of the first.

Mottoes: (over the crest) A tot bien estrainz - (below arms) Pour trois

These were probably granted in the early 20th century to Alfred Charles Latter (born 20th March 1857 died 18th November 1923), of Weald Place, Sevenoaks, Kent.  He served as Master of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wire Drawers of the City of London.  Sadly there is no pedigree mentioned in their entry in BLG, although mention of Alfred Charles’s father is named as William Latter (born 1815 died 1884).  The family in all probability regularised their arms at the College of Arms around the time of Alfred Charles’s Mastership of the Gold and Silver Wire Drawers.

With every good wish

John
