No, the custom, at least in England and Scotland, is that the mantling is in the principal color and metal of the shield. Furs are neither colors nor metals. One of the tinctures contained in the fur is therefore used in the mantling, the choice depending on whether the other main tincture in the arms is a color or a metal.

Thanks for chimming in!  Obviously, I misunderstood the custom.  I did understand that furs are neither color nor a metal.  The rest of what you said certainly makes sense to me.

Travis’s mantling would therefore, unless specified otherwise, be Azure doubled Or.

That works for me and in all likelihood I will on occassion specify something different, i.e. Azure doubled Erminois or even Azure semy of snowflakes Argent doubled Or, when commissioning other artists to paint my arms.

Absolutely stunning.  I would say he’s the best digital artist I’ve seen in the heraldry world.

Hi everybody, I´m new here but I´m very well familiar with work from Mr. Grujic. I agree, he´s one of the best heraldic artists.

I would in general agree with Joe re: fur mantelings, based on the British tradition and the resulting implication in any English-speaking country—but if the Queen’s duly delegated Canadian heralds are loosening the practice, that would IMO diminish the objection to our doing the same where the field and/or major charge of the shield are one of the heraldic furs.

I’m not saying that the Canadian practice sets a new rule, merely that it weakens the implications that would lead us to follow the old rule.  (Does that make sense?)

Perhaps a reasonable approach (assuming we were discussing a "best practice") would be to generally follow the British pattern for arms originating in, or designed in the style of, the British (English, Scottish, Irish) traditions—where the implication would be the strongest; but not so much re: arms originating in, or designed in the style of, other traditions, unless they also resembled the British in that regard?

Open for debate, surely…
