Arms of the Combat Engineer Battalion no 1. The Medal id the Medal of Aeronautical Merit awarded for the Battalion’s support for the Air Force.

I find it unusual that the arms of a unit (one a battalion, the other a regiment) would bear a medal/decoration as part of the achievement? Of course, I don’t know the significance of either award as they relate to the units in question.

Many countries make collective awards of orders and decorations to military units in the same way the U.S. armed forces use unit citations. I imagine that is the case here.

As Joe wrote It is a collective Award made to the Units mentioned, this pratice can also be seen in my thread on the Spanish Army Heraldry. For the Cavalry Regiment I don’t know the reason for the Decoration. But the Engineer Battalion was awarded for support to the Air Force.

Well a guess that the Dragon was chosen for its likedness with the word Dragoon (in Spanish dragón in booth cases).

A number of dragoon regiments around the world use dragons in their arms and badges—the 1st U.S. Cavalry (originally 1st Dragoons) being one of them:  Tenné a dragon passant Or.

Quite right, the likedness between the two words certainly lends it self to this. Which BTW has led to some quite nice Arms and Badges.

Insignia of the French 18th Dragoon Regiment, before the Revolutions known as Dragons du Roi (The King’s Dragoons) hence the Dragon on the Field semee du Lys.

The two words have the same origin, of course, with the symbolism going all the way back to the draco standards of the Sarmatian calvalry of the steppes. The original draco was probably a sort of wind-sock which helped the mounted archers to judge the wind and hit their targets.
