Someone on the old forum (Donnchadh?) asked how one would blazon the arms of Lloyd of Stockton, supposedly the holder of the record for most quarterings.  Someone in reply suggested that the blazon would begin with "Quarterly of 323…"

Anyone who has the patience to ferret out any errors is truly sick…not to mention anyone who tracks down the families to which each of the quarters pertains!

Oh my goodness! I would not want to be the heraldic artist who is responsible for rendering these arms. Just imagine being 3/4 the way home when you make a mistake…no thanks. I don’t think that you could pay me enough to do that one…man that is a lot of heraldic design.

Perversely enough, if you were the only one bearing arms "quarterly of 100+" it probably would be distinctive enough to identify you—even across the battlefield.

Hi Vijay,

I think they are more of a genealogical statement rather than arms you would bear on a battlefield. Apart from showing your heritage, I feel it becomes a bit of an heraldic mess when it comes to this sort of quartering.

If you were even there.  Someone with arms like that probably would have paid for someone else to do their fighting for them…

Hi Jim and welcome. I like your crest. A paramedic huh? Cool. My mom is a nurse and dad is a retired police detective.

John I think it’s meant to be a lineage item as well. At least that’s what I got from Neubecker on the one in his book.

Vijay, you are right even though you are tongue in cheek. It would be distinguishable by its unbelievable complication. Of course I think of the movie Braveheart where one of the Scottish lords is told of the scarlet chevron for one of the approaching English lords…can you imagine the response for this…‘no sir it is…’ LOL…too much.

I must be feeling off-colour http://forums.heraldrysociety.us/images/icons/icon10.gif  - however, I only got to the third line and saw something that didn’t gell properly - "... Sable three horses’ heads erased Argent and Argent ..."??

Never mind, eh.  I think that in your "... stupid and time-consuming trivia challenge ..." you really could have gone to a bit more effort by using Roman numerals for internal quarterings and gone to the trouble of putting in brackets after the quarter just to whom it belonged.

Shame on you for only doing this ‘stupid and time consuming trivia’ in such a half-hearted manner. http://forums.heraldrysociety.us/images/icons/icon12.gif

Joe

If you’re looking for work to do, I have plenty of projects piling up on my desk here.

Seriously, congrats on a most challenging blazon.
