It’s also time to think about what you’d like to find under your tree for yourself.  And to start making suggestions to your significant other about what that is.  Or to give to a friend who has an interest in heraldry.

If I may suggest something special for the heraldist?  "The Gore Roll: An Early American Roll of Arms".  This is _not_ just a reprint of William A. Whitmore’s original review of the 18th Century Gore roll of arms (which you may already own from when it was reprinted in Vermont’s "America Heraldica").  It’s also not just the larger and more accurate review of the rediscovered roll done in the 1930’s by Dr. Harold Bowditch of the New England Historic Genealogical Society.  Though "The Gore Roll" does contain the full text of both of these publications, it also contains further original research and, for the first time, line drawings of the arms as they appear in the roll, as well as drawings and photographs of the arms from tombstones and other sources contemporary with the roll (e.g., Guillim’s "A Display of Heraldrie", Kent’s "Grammar of Heraldry", and others).

Additional information about and sample pages of "The Gore Roll" (and the other heraldry books we offer) can be found on-line at: www.appletonstudios.com/herald7.htm It may be ordered on-line from there (through PayPal) or by mail on an order form which can be found at: www.appletonstudios.com/Order_Form.pdf

Though I’m opposed to the commercialism that comes with Christmas and opposed to thinking about Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving, I will take your advice and start dropping Beth some hints. wink

...please put a nickel into Appleton’s hat…

But seriously, I will have to see how to subtly drop such a hint to my wife.
