The University Seal

The escutcheon is a gold shield with red diamonds open in the center taken from the coat of arms of the second Earl of Winchester, Roger de Quincy. Both Lord Roger and his father Saher de Quincy did their best to temper the despotism of the English monarchy. The first Earl was one of twenty-five barons who were to enforce the Magna Carta against King John. The second Earl upheld the Provisions of Oxford against King Henry III. Roger de Quincy, with his father Saher and elder brother Robert were Crusaders fighting under the standard of Richard “The Lionhearted” on the Third Crusade. Saher and Robert died before they could return to England. Roger alone returned to inherit the family estates in 1221. He became the second Earl of Winchester on the death of his brother in 1235 and died in 1264. His coat of arms are found on the south aisle of Westminster Abbey along with those of the principal English barons of the thirteenth century. The city of Quincy, Illinois, was named after John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States. His maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Quincy, from whom he received his middle name.

There is a river in the upper portion of the shield, representing the Mississippi River along whose banks the city and the university are located.

In heraldry, a book is a symbol that represents the college or university.

The Latin motto Praeco Sum Magni Regis (I am the herald of a Great King) is that of St. Francis of Assisi. And it represents the spiritual sons who came to Quincy in 1859 and opened the college as latter day heralds of the Gospel.

It’s a pitty the patch diverges from the "explanation," and it’s a pity they didn’t simply provide a blazon if they were included to describe it in words.  There’s a whole system worked out for this kind of thing, and there’s no reason for or point to these "explanations".
