Oh-oh… blazon and emblazonment problems.

http://www.americamagazine.org/images/shield.gif

Quote:

Blazon

Argent, six pallets gules, over all two wolves grasping a caldron suspended from a chain or, on a chief azure, an anchor of three flukes cabled bendwise of the third accompanied by twelve stars in the field. Crest: a quill pen surmounting a sword, point to base in saltire. Motto: Veritatem facientes in caritate.

"two wolves grasping a caldron suspended from a chain or"

Not Or, but Sable according to the verbage below the blazon on the webpage and the emblazonment.

"anchor of three flukes cabled bendwise of the third"

Of the third=Or —but look at the emblazonment and the verbage.

"accompanied by twelve stars in the field."

OF the field

Crest: a quill pen surmounting a sword, point to base in saltire.

No tincture.

No, the description says the original Loyola arms depict the wolves and cauldron as black. In these arms for "America" the wolves and cauldron have been changed to gold for difference. This particular graphic doesn’t show it well but the wolves and cauldron (as well as the anchor) are gold even though the color seems rather dark. I have seen this emblazoned elsewhere (including "America" magazines headquarters) where the gold is more evidently gold.

See above

Could possibly be a mistake. I wonder if the person writing the blazon was making a reference to the position rather than the tincture of the stars. It seems unlikely and more probably is the error you are identifying.

Fair enough. I agree there are more clear ways to compose a blazon.

I emailed the mag webmaster, and he thinks the drawing was changed, and the wolves, etc. are really gold.  He thinks the blazon got jumbled in translation from an anniversary edition, and he is researching it.

I believe I already said that.

Look at my own avatar. The field is gold but it looks rather darker than gold. The drawing does match the blazon.

You were right.  I was reporting that the WEBMASTER agreed.

The only quibble I’d have with it is that the stars are on the field rather than in it, and I think it might be said that the chain is dependent or pendant from the chief.
