I’m interested in a contemporary book available in the U.S. on CoA’s, that covers these aspects: England & U.S.; and Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Canada, a plus. Explains all those technical terms both in the text and glossary. Neither a too simpled book, nor all inclusive tome. Under $75 in cost. Illustrated enough to explain itself. If not likely to be found on Amazon or Ebay; then a likely purchasing source. Jim/focusoninfinity
Would Stephen Slater’s Complete Book of Heraldry fit the bill? Available at Amazon.
Hate to go public with complaints, but if we could just get the "Heraldic Bookshelf" article—now finished for at least the last 4 months—up on the website, then maybe people could find this kind of information more easily.
In the meantime, see http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeohzt4/heraldbib.html

I heartily concur with Darren. Slater’s book is great and fits all your requirements! AND it’s visually stunning!

Well, as I said, you can see it on my own site at the link posted above for the time being.
Slater’s book is a (the only, really :() heraldic book I have. I would extremely recommend it.
Hopefully, I will be able to acquire some more heraldic and vexillology (I actually had 2 of ‘em) books by browsing through various second hand bookstores and other assorted purveyors of books!
Cheers,
Put my vote in for Mr. Slater’s book, too. It is a beautifully colorful book, a joy to own, and a useful reference! It’s also a nice size to throw in your briefcase or bag for a quick reference while away from the home or library.
Take care,
All votes are for Stephen Slater’s "Complete Book of Heraldry" at Amazon. I’ll get it if below $75. If above, I’ll try used. Jim
Jim, I got a new copy just a few months ago for $35. You should have no problem!
Jim,
I found my copy a few years ago at Border’s Bookstore on the "bargain books" rack for $5.99!
Take care,
Mohamed: The above book may interest you? It’s availablr on Amazon.com . Espied it when ordering Steven Slater’s book, plus two other heraldry books with CD-ROMs. Jim
I purchased my copy at Border’s as well in November 2006. Was in last week, they still had a dozen copies here for $5.99! Also, there are plenty of copies on eBay right now.
I just finished Slater’s book last night. It was excellent. I really, really like Marco Foppoli’s artwork in the book. His style is so distinctive. Anyway, the book was a very good read. Although I wish he’d spent a bit more time on the process of designing a CoA. It only came at the very end of the book, and was mainly concerned with making the shield simple and uncluttered.
Anyway, next up is Fox-Davies’ A Complete Guide to Heraldry, which arrived in the mail the other day.
