You can see these arms (I am going to have reproductions of four works in Bienal B there in May), and information about them (in Portuguese) at http://www2.portoalegre.rs.gov.br/infocidade/default.php?reg=2&p_secao=22 .

Daniel,

You should be able to make these images appear in line with your messages by:

1. Right clicking the image on the original web page.

2. Select properties.

3. Highlight the address (URL) where the image is located and then either "copy" from your menu bar or "CTRL+C".

4. On the menu for posting the message on the forum, click the little icon that looks like a postcard with a mountain and a sun, and paste the entire address into the window that pops up. Be sure not to duplicate the "http://" part.

5. Hit enter and the image should appear in the screen, like this.

The information from the city website is as follows:

Quote:

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
Designed by Francisco Bellanca and approved by Law No. 1030 of 22 January 1953. The development of the arms of Porto Alegre was mandated during the administration of Prefect Ildo Meneghetti, under Law No. 1947.

Significance of the symbols presented:
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Cross of Christ - Recalls the Christian, Portuguese origin of our people, it was used during the age of the discoveries. [Comment: This refers specifically to the cross of the Portuguese Order of Christ, under which the Portuguese explorers sailed. That’s why it represents not only Christianity but Portugueseness.]
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Colonial Gate - It was the mark of the entrance to the city. It was constructed in 1773 when Jos&#233; Marcelino de Figueiredo moved the capital of the Capitania [colonial province] of S&#227;o Pedro. [There follows a heraldry-irrelevant discussion of the history of the area surrounding the gate.] The colonial gate also remembers the installation of the clergy, the Senate, and the Chamber of Justice [presumably they were sworn in at the gate.] It is supported by a pali&#231;al (I have no idea what this translates as, but it evidently refers to the small gold mound on which the gate is standing, and resting on a gold [probable reading; the site says outro, "other," but must mean ouro, "gold"] fillet which represents the rich soil of the city, as all of the land was planted, cultivated, and full of granite [yes, it really says that] from which came the majority of the pedestals supporting the monuments of Porto Alegre.
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Caravel - Recalls the ship, Our Lady of Alminha, which, according to tradition brought to the region then known as Porto dos Dornelles or Viam&#227;o, the Azorean couples who began in 1751 the official settlement of the place, today Porto Alegre.
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Gold Mural Crown - The gold mural crown, of five towers, signifies a large city, a head city, a capital. In the family, the man is the head of the home, according to the Bible the man is the head of the couple and the woman is its heart. Thus also in the state, the capital is the head city.
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Scroll Gules [the term used on the webpage, goles, is specific to heraldic usage] - Charged with silver letters, records the heroism of our people in the political and social struggles.
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The Combination of Colors and Metals -Remembers the colors of the flags of Brazil and of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The gold is the symbol of fidelity. The blue is the serene sky of Rio Grande do Sul. The green, the gentle waters of the Gua&#237;ba River and also the verdant fields of the sacred ga&#250;cho [adjective for people and things from Rio Grande do Sul] soil. The red signifies faith and love. The silver, the seriousness and the noble and haughty character of our people.
</div>

<div class=“bbcode_left” >
The phrase [on the scroll] "loyal and valorous city of Porto Alegre" is the nobiliary title that Emperor Pedro II, granted to Porto Alegre in 1841, because of its constancy and fidelity to the throne.

Comment: The need to find recondite symbolism in every element of a coat of arms is unfortunately typical of Brazilian civic heraldry. The arms are generally excellent (often better than these) but almost invariably over-explained.

Joseph,

I did not know that you had any familiarity with the Portuguese language. The fine translation that you provided does not strike me as if it was translated by a computer program but rather by someone with a working knowledge of the language. Thank you for the good work!

Agreed.  There is explanation of symbolism oftentimes there to the level it becomes nonsensical, particularly with respect to the tinctures.  Tinctures have been loaded with so much (supposed) symbolism by overenthusiastic commentators, with so many virtues and characteristics applied to each tincture, that the symbolism of any given tincture is essentially meaningless.
