Friends:

Greetings from Rick Ronald Itzenhuiser, Master of Racine-Belle City Lodge #18, Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin. At a meeting this evening, the Lodge voted unanimously to become armigerous and wishes to convey our excitement about this project and our gratitude to the members of the American Heraldry Society for all the work that has already been done and that which may yet be done.

It is the desire of the Lodge that at our next formal business meeting, Tuesday, June 5th, Patrick Williams bring in prints of no more than four of the designs that the AHS think best. The Lodge will then choose their favorite by majority vote of those members present and voting and these arms will be assumed by Racine-Belle City Lodge.

Patrick is then charged to register these arms with the United States Heraldic Register, ordering prints, etc. for display in the lodge. Additionally, a member of our lodge who is in the granite and marble business has offered to have the arms etched into granite and then polychromed. This will be incorporated into a remodeling project that is nearing completion.

Again, please accept our sincere thanks for your work on this project.

With fondest regards,

W. Rick Ronald Itzenhuiser, Master

Racine-Belle City Lodge #18 F&AM Wisconsin

Really, guys, some of the members were so excited that they were literally bouncing in their seats. I knew they’d go for it, but I never dreamed that they would be this excited.

Here is the design I mentioned earlier to you, Patrick.  It uses the compass to divide the field per chevron.

The pillars are placeholders for whatever charge is more fitting. Or maybe the compass is enough on its own.

The tinctures of the field could be altered as well.  The crest could be used to allude to Rancine.

Mike,

I like how your design alludes to both the city, Masons, and math (square root), but the multiple levels of symbolism seem to come at a price.  All the different patterns, types of lines, and angles of lines compete for attention instead of focusing it.

Trent, as you may have seen in other Masonic arms, the three pillars have significance too, espcially if they are one of each Ionic, Doric and Corinthian.

I was fooling around with a Scandi helm and mantling I found online, so I thought I’d pop Michael’s last design in it and put the tower crest on top. Here it is:

Patrick,

I have some other Scandi ideas for you.

Here is the blazon for the first:  Argent, on a bend sinister wavy between a tree stock eradicated and a Masonic compass and square emblem Azure, three bells of the first.

Phil,

Great way to get tower and the bell in the same charge.  I was trying to think of a way to do it but kept coming up short.

I would propose retaining the tower Azure without any charges but masoning it Argent as in the field of the shield. I would then place the all seeing eye, Or on or above the battlements of the tower. I think that this symbol might be more correctly termed the Eye of Providence. We do after all want the crest to be as attractive and unique as is the proposed shield.

All wonderful ideas! Here’s Joe McMillan’s design done up in a more English style:

Trent, I’d love to play with some of your ideas, but I can’t seem to snatch your pics. Could you post them as jpegs?

David, good to see you here, I was hoping you’d contribute. I’ll see what I can do to work your idea up ... unless, of course you could do it yourself? wink

A suggestion, if the final blazon has bells:  don’t use the Liberty Bell.  It’s too specifically identifiable.  Here’s a church bell from Parker’s Glossary online.

Patrick, the drive on my newer computer crashed on Friday.  And I can’t seem to save stuff in jpeg format on the old one I’m using now.  Have you tried clicking on the images and selecting copy instead of trying to drag them?  Not sure if there’s much of a difference.

Click the pics to enlagre them:

Very interesting. This should be considered as one of the design finalists.

That is an interesting one. The only problem is that the "eye of providence" depicted is specifically NOT the masonic "all-seeing eye of God". It’s the triangle thingie ... while we represent the eye emerging from a glory, it’s usually a radiant glory, sometimes (but rarely) from within a cloud.

Here’s a link to a very common depiction:

http://www.lewis-clark.org/media/images/lew_masonapr-detl3.jpg

This is from the Masonic apron of Meriwether Lewis, the explorer.

And this: http://www.nvo.com/lauterer/nss-folder/pictures/3006OF.jpg

from a modern Masonic apron. Because of all the whackos and conspiracy theorists out there, Masons, at least in the US, are very particular regarding the fashion in which they display their symbols. I’m afraid this one would be rejected out of hand because of how the eye is depicted.
