My newest client is named Bauer. She is having arms created in memory of her father who died last December.

I’ve learned that the family came from the border area between Germany and Austria. I’ve also learned that the name Bauer means farmer.

So, what farm equipment in heraldry, German heraldry if possible, is used? I can think of a spade, but, what else?

You might consider the heraldic plough in the arms of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati: http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=73&Itemid=435

Otherwise, you might consider some creative arrangement of beats, turnips or carrots. The Germans got quite creative with their heraldic vegetables.

Thanks. Good ideas. I will forward them to my client and let her decide which ones she likes best.

I think that the spade is used more for gardeners, for farmers surely the plough!

I think she is set on a spade, but what plow…the whole thing or the blade?

She is having these made for her deceased dad, so there is an element of his service in the US Army Air Coprs I want to add…I was thinking wings, but the good rev advised to check out with whom he served and see if the insignia had something I could add…so, I am going to be combining a spade (plow) for farmer and some sort of charge relating to the Air Coprs in WWII…we’ll see…if u have any other ideas please let me know. Thanks.

I meant the entire plough as a charge, as in the arms of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

I believe Bauer can also mean "builder" in German.

If you want to indicate farming, you could always use a field tappissee of wheat, as in the base of the arms of the University of Alberta.

Yes, that’s a pronghorn.  It’s there because it matches the pronghorn which acts as a supporter to the arms of the province of Alberta. (http://mad-alchemy.com/heraldry/alberta.htm)

The collars are there simply to match the crest and supporters to the arms (green and gold) and to difference them from other people’s pronghorns, bears, etc. I don’t see any chains.
