Wow, Trent…I really like that last one.
And here’s one I just threw together:

I tried to make for a simpler less cluttered design.

forgive me, but I am still focused on the pale. I like this design:

Putting the ideas to a vote of your club is a great idea! I have to admit that I am not a fan of putting chessmen, dice, card pips, etc. on arms, particularly when they are in a gaming context, but that is my predjudice.
If you want to have the king symbology, then why not, for instance, remove the tun from Trent’s last design, or the chess king from your last attempt, and replace it with an antique crown?
In any event, might I suggest that you take all likely designs, print them out and do an extended ‘refrigerator test’? Post them somewhere that the members can look at them for a month or two and then vote. And please let us know which design wins! :D
Johnathan,
I really like your last design. Maybe make the chess king gold since it was one of the four colors you wanted to include on the shield.
I know you’re wedded to the idea of including a chess piece, but I think many people, especially tournament chess players like myself, will look at it and think that those of are the arms of a chess club whose mascot is a crow, raven, or rook.
I think I like Trent’s last idea best. What if you moved the position of the crow to a displayed attitude to be more symetrical and placed the king chesspiece on it’s chest? Like this:

Take care,
Phil,
I can’t take credit for that last version, but thanks. It’s just a combinatioin of your design, mine, and Patrick’s—the three he said he liked the most.
Well, it has been a very long time since there’s been any movement on this thread, but we finally had a club meeting and this is the achievement that was decided on.
If you see any small things that need to be tweaked, let me know, but the overall design is pretty well done, at this point.

I showed them all the proposed designs and we cherry picked all the ideas we liked and stuck them in a blender. We ended up with crossed swords rather than the chess piece as we didn’t want to look like a glorified chess club:D
Very nice.
I would tweak the chief. No symbolic need to keep it wavy to represent smoke and drink since the charges on the chief do that.
Have you heard of the stamp test? Think about how difficult it would be to make out the charges on the saltire if it were postage stamp size, lapel pin size, or a small sewn design on a shirt.
I would tweak the saltire, making it just a saltire Argent or just two swords in saltire throughout Argent, but not both.
Also one may have trouble seeing the Argent or Gray blades of the swords on an Argent saltire. That’s another reason to reconsider this design.
Do you need to repeat the leaves in the crest since they are already on the chief?
Two more tries….I’ll run ‘em past the guys in the morning.
JRB, I like the latest rendition sans saltire with swords hilted and pommeled Or. Have you tried just a tobacco flower or leaf on either side of the tun instead of a whole sprig? Just another thought. :D
Take care,
