Same interview with pictures

I’m trying to get permission to reprint this.
That was an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing, Michael!
Hugh:
I think it’s a good idea to be able to save the interview in case it becomes unavailable on the parent website. I hope that they grant us permission to do so.
I just got off the phone with Mr. Mugno. He’s asked us (in the immediate term, me) to work with him on a series of education/training seminars for his staff, probably starting with something on the presidential arms and maybe the national arms. We talked about convergence in his mission and ours, etc.
I’ve been playing with the idea of seeing if we can collaborate with other institutions on an exhibition of heraldic art. It occurs to me that there might be something possible on an exhibition of military heraldry in conjunction with TIOH, maybe the service history offices and the Smithsonian. Worth exploring.
Thanks Joe. I am happy that we are making these connections.

Wow—collaborations such as those would be terrific and really raise the profile of AHS.
Wow, Joe….That’s very exciting! I look forward to the fruits of this cooperation.
Mike, thanks for that nice article.
Joe, good luck with the future collaboration.
Has Mr. Mungo attended any of the International Genealogical & Heraldry Conferences? I would think he’d be the perfect official to represent a "United States Herald". No need for a tabard .... but ..... It would sure be nice.
Cheers,
—Guy
Thank you for the article, Michael. And well done, Joseph!
Mugno: Heraldry is based on a small basic set of tinctures: azure (dark blue), gules (red), celeste (light blue), vert (green), sable (black), sanguine (brown/maroon) and tenne (orange).
A question: Since the TIOH is the only "official" heraldic office in the country, should we make anything of the fact that Purpure didn’t make the list, other than an accidental ommission? I also note the addition of Celeste to the list, and the ommission of Murrey (or Mulberry).
Since one of our objectives is the establishment of some type of protection for armorial bearings, once the government gets involved with this, they will quite naturally call on the TIOH for their recommendations and ideas. Is there a "manual" or SOP that they use which we could perhaps review here, just to get up to speed. It would do us no good to make proposals here if they are going to be "out of step" to a large part with the way TIOH views things. Just a question.

Institute Creates, Preserves U.S. Military Heraldry
Meghan Vittrup, American Forces Press Service
2007-07-25
FORT BELVOIR, Va., July 24, 2007 – Many years ago, when 2nd Lt. Charles Mugno would put on his uniform every day, he was not fully aware of the true meaning behind the insignia that he wore. Now, as director of the Institute of Heraldry, Mugno is one of the world’s foremost experts on such insignia.
Housed here in an old drab building is one of the nation’s most creative and colorful divisions. The Institute of Heraldry is responsible for maintaining the nation’s insignia and heritage by creating official seals for government offices and designing military insignia, including coats of arms, flags, patches, badges and medals. The institute also creates and archives military heraldry and insignia.
“We are our nation’s premier team of heraldic experts, the guardians of our national symbolic heritage,” Mugno said. “We view it as our responsibility to be the guardians of national emblems, kind of like the keepers of emblems and insignia of the United States.”

It seems like the Institute of Heraldry has been getting a lot of press lately. That can’t be anything but good news for those interested in American heraldry. Is this thanks to a proactive Director of the Institute, or is there some other reason (or am I imagining the increased press?).
Yes, thanks to a proactive director. He told me that raising the Institute’s profile was one of his goals when he took the job.
