It does not yet appear on the Thylacine Press website but today in the mail I received some advertisements for two new books by Michael McCarthy. One is entitled Armoria Pontificalium: A Roll of Papal Arms 1012-2006. I recall having seen some of this book in an advance form the last time I visited with Mr. McCarthy. It looks fantastic. Anyone who has any of his other works will know how good the quality of his publications are.

This one includes the blazons of the arms with illustrations of actual examples of their arms taken from manuscripts, artwork, monuments, etc. It also includes a color version of the Roll of Arms from the Annuario Pontificio. The book includes the Strohl Wappenrolle in its entirety as well as the author’s own rendition of the roll of papal arms.

The book is for sale at $88.00 including postage.

The other book is a bit of a departure in that it is not about ecclesiastical heraldry and is really only about heraldry insofar as it concerns one of the great heraldic beasts. It is entitled Dragonkind. This one is for sale at $44.00.

Even though the website does not yet mention them I’m sure you could order them through the website simply by asking for them by name. The books will be publish in April, 2007. Thylacine Press can be found at http://www.homepages.ihug.com.au/~thylacinepress/

I just had a communication from Michael McCarthy today in which he informs me the book Armoria Pontificalium has been published and was mailed out on July 5. It should be here any day now! I can’t wait and will, of course, give a full report.

McCarthy’s new book, Armoria Pontificalium arrived today. It looks SPECTACULAR. He has asked me to write a review which I will be doing over the weekend once I have a chance to look through it more. In addition to Michael’s own art (which is really good) the book also publishes Ströl’s Die Wappenrolle der Päpste.

If you have an interest in papal heraldry BUY IT! It’s $88.00 plus shipping available from Thylacine Press at http://www.homepages.ihug.com.au/~thylacinepress/. Hock your jewels if you have to or give up Starbucks for a while (which, at their prices is like 2 weeks, right?) but GET ONE! Unlike his other books this one is hardcover and with mostly color illustrations.

The forward is by Andrea Cardinal Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo, the Archpriest of St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls in Rome and the man who designed Pope Benedict’s coat of arms.

Samples below of McCarthy’s art:

It does look to be a fine book.  The artwork is beautiful.  Sadly, It would take more than a couple of weeks for this college student to save up for it.

In addition to the Armoria Pontificalium McCarthy has also published a book on one of everyone’s favorite heraldic beasts called Dragonkind.

By the way, in case anyone’s wondering, I’m just pushing these books because I think they’re good. I don’t get any kickbacks from McCarthy or anything!

You should good Father! After all you’re doing some fine leg-work for Mr. McCarthy. smile

I hope that when my situation betters I can start to buy these books frankly. So I hope you continue to write about them.

I received Dragonkind in the post of day before yesterday, and I like it very much.  It should come as no surprise that I have a penchant for dragons, and so I ordered it as soon as I heard about it.
