My 2 cents worth—rather than citing to "rules" of heraldry, which can rub folks the wrong way unless the reason behind the rule is readily apparent to the heraldically dyslexic—better to merely point out that the common custom was to aim for high contrast between darker colors (red, blue, black etc) and lighter colors (gold or yellow & silver or white) so it would stand out better, especially at a distance; & that while gold on silver or vice-versa could be very attractive up-close, the design would be very difficult to discerne at a distance or in the heat of battle.  The average person can see the usefulness of that custom without the "my way or the highway" feel of a "rule" or "law"

Wouldn’t it have been better to contact the Faire officials and explained the issue and even volunteered to help in the future, rather than send a letter to the editor of the local newspaper?
