I was recently honored to have Terry offer to emblazon my coat of arms.  I was delighted to receive his work in the mail today, and thought I would share it with all of you.

Of course it loses a lot in the scan, the colors a much more vibrant in person.

I wanted to take a quick moment to thank Kevin for allowing me to work on an Emblazonment for him.  When I asked his permission, he knew that I was (am) still in the process of learning how to do a correct emblazonment and various things like helm design.  He was kind enough to let me learn and grow as a beginning artist with his work.

Kevin, congrats on a fine emblazonment! Is it acrylics on canvas board/paper? Very attractive IMO.

Terry, this is nice. I remember my first few ones, as do many people here from several years ago I suspect. Mine were too ‘cartoonish’, as that is what I did and what I most associated heraldry with.

We all have our own built in limitations when we begin, mine was cartooning, but I am getting better. From what I see here and in the pencil sketch of the helm and mantling you sent me a month or so ago I can say that I think you are better than you think you are and with practice will get only better.

Good job. smile

I like the overall drawing and painting, some advice : use a black outline on the shield and things, it will give your painting a more defined and sharper look.

Ton, Thank you!  I really appreciate the advice, it is little things like this that could take me forever to figure out without some guidance.  smile

Terry, some more advice, black is my standard for bold lines. However, you can also use a dark crimson as the eye sees it as absorbing the colors and it appears black. I also use light browns and tans for gold.

The price for acrylics, especially the wood I would paint on, has just gone up too much for me - I’m waiting for them to come down again. However I can give you some acrylic painting tips I’ve found useful over the years if you’d like just email me or respond to one of my heraldry ring emails…otherwise I’ll forget. For me anyway, acrylics are the best painting medium to use as they can be prepped and applied to almost everything you can think of and are really forgiving when it comes to mistakes and easy to mix and blend for truly creative pieces of art.

First rule of acrylics is to loose your ideas on what is OK and not. Feel free to let loose with them and get really, really creative!

I don’t have a pic of it, but my favorite piece I did was a "Harvest Moon" with acrylics on a 10’ X 3’ panel of pine for my parish’s "Harvest Festival" every Sept/Oct. Best part was the metallic silver paint for the stars so that when the lights were lower for the country dancing it just lit up that part of the wall…just too cool.

OK…sorry to ramble on. smile C’ya.
