Greetings American Heralds,

I am a daughter of the late Harry Downing Temple, heraldic designer from Virginia. I am seeking an archival home for his many files, mostly his own heraldic designs for various universities, churches and towns. It is a four-drawer wooden file cabinet-full. My criteria is that his files would be accessible to other people interested in American heraldry.

Sincerely, Mary Moore McLaughlin

I would check with the Army’s Institute of Heraldry to see if they would archive the materials, since he headed the institute in the 60s’.  Virgina Tech might also be interested, but your best bet is the New England Historic Genealogical Society   Committee on Heraldry, which does have archiving experts and a deep interest in American Heraldry.  Plan B   is to scan (or have someone scan) the files and compile them into a book that could be purchased online. Since the paper is less than 50 years old, it probably has not begun to deteriorate and can be scanned without special handling.

An honor, indeed!  For those who were not aware, Harry Downing Temple graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1934 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering.  He served in the Army during WW2 and Korea.  From 1961 to 1966 he headed the Army’s Institute of Heraldry (TIOH), and designed the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He retired from the Army in 1966 as a Colonel.

I wonder if it would be possible for Ms. McLaughlin to post a few of her father’s emblazonments for the benefit of our members who are unfamiliar with his work and heraldic style?

I for one, would love to see some of his work.

Thank you, Reverend, for posting the brief bio.

Is the version we have on site his original artwork, or another artist?

would it be not OK to ask her for a scanned, or somehow digital, copy of these files so they can be uploaded here and open for people who come here looking for heraldry, American heraldry in particular, as well as wherever the originals go? or is that not kosher?

It would please me to share my father’s beautiful designs. He became interested in heraldry at the age of 14 and studied all his life. Just give me time to figure out how to negotiate this site with pictures. Wish I had time to scan the entirety of his files, but I would be happy to answer to inquires concerning designs for particular institutions. But the way, his lifetime collection of books on the art of heraldry are with the special collections at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Not sure what version to which you refer. However, I can tell you that if my father deemed a design to be of enough importance, he would commission his English friend, Dan Escot (spelling?), to do the painting of his designs. Mr. Escot was a fabulous heraldic artist, younger than my father, but who died before Daddy.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. (I was not aware of where all you have been on our humble site!).  I was referring to this emblazonment:

http://americanheraldry.org/pages/index.php?n=DesignAward.VirginiaTech

I was just wondering if this were the original version done by your father or perhaps Mr. Escot.

This one was designed and painted by my father. Dan Escott painted the one that is my avatar (designed by Daddy).
