Happy independence day guys! (to be honest we are glad to be shot of you) :D

However it is also a time for remembrance too, to those families on both sides devastated at the time by a bloody war.

Later Scots in particular would become grateful to your independence as many fled government genocide after the 1745 rebellion. For over 100 years from the 45’ the Highlands in particular were devastated by starvation & homelessness as Highland society changed. Chiefs and their families moved south to a more fashionable way of life and sheep & seaweed became more profitable than men. It is estimated that nearly two thirds of the Highland population left for new lands in North America and the Highland way of life was gone for ever.

So for many of our ancestors they were kind of glad you guys were around :p

If you want to know more there is a good Article Here at the end of the article there is a nice we video clip but it will take a min to stream down depending on your connection speed.

Very nice video!

It is true that as in all civil wars, in many cases, treatment of captured combatants and civilians by both sides was reprehensible, and that in many cases father was pitted against son, and brother against brother. Considering the number of Scots in the Continental Army, and the Highland Regiments on the British side, It is a certainty that Clansman was pitted against Clansman. I am glad we have gotten past all that.

George Washington:

‘If defeated everywhere else, I will make my final stand for liberty among the Scots-Irish in my native Virginia.’

William McKinley:

‘The Scots-Irish were the first to proclaim for freedom in these United States; even before Lexington Scots-Irish blood had been shed for American freedom.’

General Robert E. Lee:

‘What race of people makes the best soldiers? The Scots who came to this country by way of Ireland.’

Theodore Roosevelt:

‘In the Revolutionary war . . . the fiercest and most ardent Americans of all were the Presbyterian Scots-Irish settlers and their descendants. . . the love of freedom rooted in their very hearts’ core.’

English commander:

‘Call this war by whatever name you may, only call it not an American rebellion; it is nothing more or less than a Scotch Irish Presbyterian rebellion.’

It would also be fit to remember the help sent by the King of France, which amounted to several regiments amongst other things.

Hope you all have recovered form yesterdays celebrations wink

I dare say, Had France not seen fit to be of assistance, it all may have turned out differently.

One of the things I learned while in France was how to make some good crepes. I have plans to open a crepe stand at next years 4th of July fair in my home town. Between some French and American flags, the sign above the stand will read: Happy Independance day! We helped!

I’m hoping a tiny spark of obligation or thanks may get me a few more sales. wink

OK. Independence Day is over and this thread stopped being about heraldry a while ago. I think it’s safe to say we’re done here.
