I spent the holiday weekend in Gettysburg, PA, and noticed one of the shops downtown displayed a coat of arms. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to go inside and ask about it. Does anyone know about these arms? Are they historical, assumed, or (for lack of a better word) contrived? With the exception that they appear to have been emblazoned on a piece of toast instead of a shield, I think they’re quite attractive.

It looks like something that’s been recopied a couple of times by people who don’t know much about heraldry.  Is that supposed to be an eagle in the crest?

The design is nice, but the artwork isn’t.

What’s the difference between assumed and contrived?

The former is when someone designs arms to be borne as arms, and they, or someone else, uses them with intent. The latter is when someone creates arms as a decoration because they want a nice picture.

Oddly enough, I attended school with someone whose given name was Bender.

I gather Guy remembered these arms on this cartoon from somewhere or other.  However, for those like me who are less well informed, can someone explain where this image came from.  Also, in its original context, was it labeled "House of Bender?"

This is from a Fox TV, quasi-"Simpsons" cartoon spin-off called "Futurama." This robot, who is fueled by alcohol - or at least seems that way, is named bender because his original function before being "liberated" was to bend pieces of metal. As much as this (almost) protagonist would like it, there is no House of Bender in the show.

Guy remembered the character Bender. The placing of the arms on the cartoon was his work, not Groening’s.

Nicely done BTW, Guy. wink

The skills from a misplaced adolescence .... er dotage.  I just cut the "Arms of Bender" as supplied in Post#1; reduced to size; then transferred to Groenig’s creation.

Hope I don’t get sued.  :D
