Hey everybody! :D
Does anyone know if any Native American tribes or groups have ever been granted coats of arms? (IE real coats of arms, not ‘seals/emblems’)? Are there any historical examples? Perhaps from the 1600s (attributed perhaps?) ?
Also, are there any comparable systems of identity to heraldry in the many Native American cultures? (Because I wanted to know, if totem poles were used to identify families/tribes or if they have a more spiritual reason)
Cheers,
the mexican emblem is based off an old aztec symbol, not sure if it was ever used like an achievement to sign or seal anything.

and i believe it is the mayans that repeated symbols like skulls with ravens, that meet the requirements for good heraldry. simply lacking a shield.
im not very well versed in native symbols, so someone would have to elaborate on the usages of these. but im sure the kings all had some personal emblem to attach to walls and such, even if not on the shield like europeans.

The Spanish granted arms to various Indian nobles as well as to villages, etc. Not, as far as I know to tribes as a whole. The College of Arms has devised arms for at least one American Indian tribe, and I’m sure the Canadian Heraldic Authority has granted a large number to various First Nations (as they are called in Canada) groups.

Yes, the figures in totem poles signify lineages.
Some, but not all, totem poles signify lineages. On the whole, however, there is no equivalent to heraldry as we know it in the various Native American cultures.
On this thread from a million years ago, I posted some photos I took of Zapotec imagery that bears a striking resemblance to heraldry.

From Stephen Slater’s "The Complete Book of Heraldry:"
[T]he Spanish colonizers granted titles and arms to the native aristocracy and royalty they had conquered, as a way of excusing them from encomienda system of forced labour imposed by the Spanish rulers during 16th century Native American leaders could avoid this if they could successfully claim the privileges of the Spanish nobility. One remarkable instance is the case the descendants of the Aztec emperor - Montezuma II, who ruled central Mexico from 1480 to 1520. Phillip II of Spain granted the title of count to Don Pedro Tesifon Moctezuma de la Cueva in 1627 and Isabel II granted the titles of marquess and duke to other descendants in 1864 and 1865. The family bore arms blazoned Vert within an orle of five roses Argent a falcon and tiger Or in pale a bordure GuTles charged with thirty coronets Or, or alternately Azure an imperial crown Or a falcon and tiger Argent all in pale a bordure Vert charged with thirty coronets Or.
In 1984, a claimant to the Aztec throne, Don Guillermo de Grau-Moctezuma, appointed a personal herald, the Cronista Rey de Armas de la Casa Imperial Azteca.

The Oxford Book of Heraldry (approx title) IIRC shows the arms granted (or better, devised) by the English heralds for IIRC one of the Apache tribes? Interesting design.
