Nice Charles Glass, here are some more Stall Plates not included in the Book Kungliga Serafimerorden 1748-1998. These include newly appointed Knights and old ones whose Plates have not before been painted. The Pictures are presented in the Vapenbilden (No. 55 May 2003 and No. 58 May 2004).

H.M. Shah Reza Pahlavi of Persia (1878-1944) Appointed 10 November 1934. He abdicated in 1941 under pressure from the allies. Unfortunately the quality of the Picture is rather poor.

Habib ibn Ali Bourguiba (1903-2000), 1st President of Tunisia 1957-1987. Appointed Knight 22 May 1963. Arms are based on those of the Republic.

Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980), President of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia 1953-1980. Appointed Knight 11 March 1976. The Emblem shown are those of the SFR of Yugoslavia.

Thomas Klestil (1932-2004), Federal President of Austria 1992-2004 (died of Heart failure just three days before he was to leave office). Appointed Knight 15 September 1997. Apart from the Argent Shield Klestil’s arms are identical to those of Austria.

Constantinos Stephanopoulos (1926-), President of Greece 1995-2005. Appointed Knight 24 April 1999. He uses the Arms of Greece.

Petar Stojanov (1952-) President of Bulgaria 1997-2002. Appointed Knight 27 October 2000. The use of the Arms of Bulgaria nearly makes one believe that we here have once more a King of Bulgaria. Oddly enough the former King Simeon II (as Simeon Sakskoburggotski, the Bulgarian Royal Family was of the Saxony-Coburg and Gotha Family as is the British Royal Family. The latter changed their name to Windsor during World War I) was Primeminister of Bulgaria 2001-2005.

HRH Prince Philippe of Belgium, Duke of Brabant and Heir to the Throne (1960-). Appointed Knight 26 April 2001.

I don’t think this is precisely true as the field or at least the "sky" part (I haven’t seen a blazon) seems to be purpure rather than the Azure of the national arms.

Yes Daniel you seem to be right there the Country Arms have a more Azure "sky" than the Tubman Arms.

Chiang Kai-Shek’s "coat of arms" in actuality is the Great Seal of the Republic of China

http://www.president.gov.tw/en/s_page/great_5.jpg  http://www.president.gov.tw/en/s_page/great_1.jpg
Quote:

The Seal of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is the official seal of the state. It is used for marking credentials, instruments of ratification, instruments of acceptance, full powers, exequaturs, consular commissions, etc. This seal was made by the National Government after it achieved national unification in the wake of the Northward Expedition, and was first used on October 10, 1929.

Made of emerald jade, the seal weighs 3.2 kilograms and stands 10 cm in height, 4.3 cm being the height of the body and 5.7 cm being that of the handle. The face of the seal is 13.3 cm square.

Because the seal is made of such a highly precious, rarely found material, and because the size of its face is bigger than those of ordinary seals, special care must be taken in using it so that its body will not be damaged and the color of the imprints will be even. The steps of using are to fix the seal in a face-up setting, cover the face of the seal with cinnabar oil ink, fix the document sheet for marking face down, and apply pressure evenly on the back of the sheet. The whole process is something like marking the rubbing.

Wow, just amazing, thank you so much for this wonderful display of international heraldry! Seeing the Royal Arms of Egypt (on HM King Farouk I’s stall plate) with the Order of the Seraphim replacing the collar of the Order of Muhammad Aly in the original arms really made my day the design is so nice! :D

Also loved the arms of Iran, Jordan, and the Emperor and Empress of Ethiopia’s stall plates.

Cheers,

Well Mohammed, King Farouk’s Stall Plate does show an interresting blending of Muslim and Christian Symbolism.

Édouard Thouvenel (1818-1866), French Minister of Foreign Affairs 1860-1862. Appointed Knight 26 August 1961 during the State Visit of King Karl XV to France. In 1865 a Plate was painted for Thouvenel but the shield was left blank. In recent years information on the arms have been obtained and a new Plate was painted showing the arms.

HIH Crown Prince (as he was then) Asfa Wossen of Ethiopia (1916-1997). Appointed Knight 15 November 1954 during his State Visit to Sweden. His father Hailie Selassie I died in 1975 and at the same time a communist coup-de-etat overthrew the monarchy. Asfa Wossen, at the time under medical treatment in Switzerland, remained in exile and in 1989 he proclaimed himself Emperor of Ethiopia as Amha Selassie I.

HIH Crownprince Cyrus Reza of Iran (1960-). Appointed Knight 24 November 1970. Forced to leave Iran in 1979 following the death of his father Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi in 1980 he is pretender to the throne of Iran as Shah Reza II. He now lives in the USA with his wife and two daughters.

The Stall Plate of Rudolf Schuster (1934- , he is of mixed Carpathian German/Hungarian origin), President of Slovakia 1999-2004, had an interesting history:

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/2050/sch1vd8.jpg

This Plate with the arms of the Republic of Slovakia was begun before it was brought to notice that President Schuster had personal arms. The Plate was then turned around and the personal arms were painted there. Below the Plate with the personal arms.

What exactly does this seal say? I know that it does not read The Nationalist Republic of China as I own a 1930’s jade (low quality stone) seal used by a Chinese functionary which is inscribed The Nationalist Republic of China on the side of the seal, with the name of the governmental department on the other side.

Dear Daniel, this bordure is a heraldic insignia of the office of President of Slovakia. It was introduced by the Heraldic College, the Slovakian demi-private monopolist body (no idea how do they manage it legally, but they do) which is responsible for personal heraldry, and accepted by the Heraldic Register (this term is applied both to the register as such and to the board thereof, which is theoretically the supreme state authority as to heraldry, being subordinated to the National Archives as a subdivision of the Ministry of the Inner). In the case of the municipal arms, the Register’s staff is collaborating with, and assisted in its work by the Heraldic Commission, this time a fully official body existing since 1975. In fact, it is the opinion of the Commission which is decisive as to expertise and registration (or refusal), the registrars being obliged to follow the Commission’s verdict; and probably the same is true for the collaboration of the College and the Register [i.e. its board].

David,

The kanji read:

中華民国乃璽

I don’t read Chinese, but in Japanese it would be pronounced Chu-ka Min-koku no Ji-shi [Chinese People’s Republic(‘s) Great Seal].

"China" in ideograms is 中国

"Chinese" is 中華

璽 means both (a) imperial signet, and (2) great seal

The possessive article 乃 can be written as it is on the seal (similar to 土 but with upturned arms), or as 乃; and additionally, in Japanese as の (which derives from 乃 ... the first stroke is the downward left-sloping; second troke is the "3" ... when run together quickly they can form の).
