Well Women and Members of the Clergy* Appointed to the Order usualy displayed their Order suspended from a Blue Ribbon instead of the Collar. I you click on the Link to Queen Silvia’s Stall Plate you will see that she also has a Blue Ribbon. There are however some exceptions which seems to be ruling Queens and in the Crown Princess’ case also future ruling Queens. And in earlier times the Queen of Sweden seems to have used the Collar.

Marcus, on some of the arms, such as those of Admiral Ericson, Marshal of the Realm, are any of the features symbols of office that are placed on the arms of any holder of the office (such as in ancien regime France) , rather than an original design for the individual’s arms? What got my attention the most was the crest of batons on Adm. Ericson’s arms.

Cheers,

Well you can see the Arms of Sten Rudholm on the previous page showing behind his shield both a Baton of the Marshal of the Realm and of the Chanchellor of the Order. The Supreme Commanders all seems to have incorporated the Crossed Field Marshal’s Batons (called Command Batons as the Grade of Field Marshal can only be awarded in time of War). The Archbishops also used the Mitre, Cross staff and Crozier (or just Mitre and Crozier).

But there was never a system to distinguish Office Holders like in France or the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation).

This is, perhaps, a stupid question, Marcus, but have you been to the Riddarsholmkyrkan and seen the many plates displayed on all the walls? It is indeed an awesome sight. I was very impressed with that when I was there.

Sorry to insert my pics, but hey, I got ‘em!  They do not allow tourists to take pictures in the Riddarholmskyrkan.  The carvings on the floor were impressive.  It’s too bad they do not attempt to preserve the heraldry on the floor, because foot traffic has worn away the many heraldic images.

My question is: What book documents the arms in the House and the Church?

Not my pics:

Yes Father Guy I have been to the Riddarholmskyrkan a few times (at present I live only about 25 minutes by Commuter Train from the church). I agree it is quite impressive to see the shields.

Nice Pictures Michael. On the second picture you can see the Stall Plate of the Late Prince Rainier III of Monaco (husband of Grace Kelly). This illustrate the practice that on the day of the funeral of a dead knight the Bells of the riddarholmskyrkan ar tolled the so called Seraphim Tolling and the shield are displayed like this.

Acctualy I’am not sure if there is a book that displays all the Plates at the Riddarhuset. A few is shown in the the book Svensk adelsheraldik by Jan Raneke. The book Kungliga Serafimerorden 1748-1998 shows all Plates of the Order most of which is to be found at the Riddarholmskyrkan. I doesn’t know if there is any book on the other heraldry to be found in the Church.
