Just to add some historical background.  These were SA’s first proper warships, commissioned in 1944-45.  Ship name prefixes were HMSAS (‘His Majesty’s SA Ship’) until 1952, when the HM was dropped.

Their badges were originally diamond-shaped, ensigned with naval crowns in Royal Navy style.  The SAN changed to circular badges a few years later, and then replaced the naval crown with the lion crest (called the ‘Navy lion’ in this context) in the mid-1950s.

HMSAS Natal’s original badge had the wildebeest running above a barry base, presumably white and blue.  Transvaal’s had the oxwagon on a base barry wavy.

The South African Submarine Arm was born in 1970 when three Submarines av the was bougth from France. These where of the Daphne Class and was named after famous Women from the South African History. As these where all white they where deemed controversial and the new government renamed them after Spear in different languages. The new class of Submarines now replacing these Submarines however continues the tradition of naming SA Submarines after Women from the SA history.
