Thank you, dear David, but I am rather inclined to believe that partial baldness and dark shades resulted in a misleading visual effect.

In Chapter One, Page Six, entry No. Eleven is entered one Ivan Feodorovich Martynov who is a contemporary of your Ivan. He is placed in Saratov in 1704 and in the Yaroslav Governate in 1722.

Another Ivan from the same time period can be found in Chapter One, Page Eleven, entry No. Twenty-three is entered one Ivan Kyrillovich (senior) Martynov. Voivode (Provincial Military Commander) of Samara in 1736.

Another can be found in Chapter One, Page Twelve, entry No. Twenty-four is entered one Ivan Kyrillovich (junior) Martynov who was a soldier in the Semenova Life Guard Regiment who died without issue.

Another is found in Chapter One, Page Twelve, entry No. Twenty-six is entered one Ivan Nikitich Martynov who lived in Razan in 1722. A Dragoon (mounted rifleman) who died without issue.

A mid-eighteenth century Ivan is Ivan Savich Martynov, Chapter One, Page Fourteen, entry No. Thirty-seven, a Corporal in the Semenova Life Guard Regiment who also died without issue.

A Ivan Mikhailovich Martynov is in Chapter One, Page Twenty-seven, entry No. Fifty-nine who died in 1752 at Lipyargah (a place unknown to me).

I hope that something here is of value to you.

I know I chewed through this in Germany,

but I always seem to run into a wall of silence

or a wall of limited of knowledge !

I can’t help but to wonder why I can’t find anything (or extremely limited amount) about him!

Readers in the US should be able to read following!!!

Quote from this site!

http://books.google.com/books?id=c6AtAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA306&dq=“Canonicus+St.+Petersburg+1876”&lr=&client=firefox-a#v=onepage&q=Canonicus&f=false

Page 293

Year 1876

"""Am 22., dem Namensfeste Ihrer Majestät der Kaiserin und Ihrer Kaiserl. Hoheit der Großfürstin-Thronfolger, hielt der aus St. Petersburg hier angelangte, frühere hiesige Universitäts-Caplan,

Domherr an der Maltheser-Kirche des heil. Johannes von Jerusalem, Canonicus und Ordensmitglied Adolph Martynoff

die Messe in der hiesigen Univ.-Kirche Visit. St. Bened. Virg."""

The old "y" in Martynoff is being confused by the computer with an "h"

....it reads Marthnoff

Same year 1876

Bottom of page 306 and top of 307

"""D o r p a t.

http://books.google.com/books?id=1rwpAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA34&dq=“Adolf+Martinoff”&lr=&client=firefox-a#v=onepage&q=“Adolf Martinoff”&f=false

in 1880 or 1882 they wanted to elect him to Bishop of Wilna!

He was canon at this church!

http://spb-svu.nm.ru/museum-2.html#MMM2

The two links I had found in Russia are now removed,

or my access was revoked/denied/forbidden!

If any of you could help me with further information about him

...it would be much appreciated !

Thank you for your help!

With my best regards,

Frank

Do you understand German, if so no need to translate. See comments below.

Dorpat is the present day city of Tartu, Estonia, the name Dorpat was used by the German, Swedish and Russian rulers.

He was canon at this church!

The church as you call it is actually the Vorontsov Palace which has been a junior military academy since the reign of Paul I. At the rear of the building are two chapels, the Cathoilc one the ground level and the Orthodox on the next floor above it if I remember correctly. These are known as the Maltese Chapels as they were constructed for the new Russian knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem when Emperor Paul I became the de facto grand master. The palace itself became the l’Ecole des Corps des Pages in 1810 and trained boys from the highest noblility for military and court life. After the Revolution the building again housed young military cadets, this time as the Suvorov Academy.

Thank you David for organizing my question better!

Just a little extra information:

If the Papal Nuntius Cardinal Jacobi (Vienna) is correct,

he was only 27 years old at the time he was "ordained" in St. Petersburg!

Les accords de Vienne et de Rome entre le Saint-Siège et la Russie, 1880-1882

Here named as "Martynhoff"

Pages 240 and 220

http://books.google.com/books?id=mecAT3iNYvIC&pg=PA220&dq=Martynhoff&lr=#v=onepage&q=Martynhoff&f=false

Some

"Vital Dates"

April, 19th, 1873 chaplain in Tartu aka. Dorpat

4. June1874 intermittent chaplain in St. Petersburg

(Corps des Pages a. Maltese Chapel)

on 14. Aug. 1874 ordained as full chaplain

29. January 1876 ordained as canon!

I don’t know about German or Russian, but in English, being made a canon is not being "canonized."  Being canonized would mean that he was declared to be a saint, which, for a Roman Catholic, would not have been done in St. Petersburg, nor while he was still alive!

I’m not a moderator so offer this merely as an observation:  isn’t this rather far afield from the focus of this forum, which is heraldry?  I’m sure the biography of the Rev. Fr. Martynov is a fascinating subject, but…
