Shooting off from the discussion in the Cincinnati thread, here are the arms of John Paul Jones as painted in 1776/77, according to Samuel Eliot Morison’s John Paul Jones: A Sailor’s Biography, p. 98:.

Blazons for names beginning with J in our "Roll of Early American Arms" are now up, and includes JPJ’s arms blazon.

BTW - If anyone would like to help in providing emblazonments for arms on this roll, they would be most welcome.

Prompted by Arian’s posting in another thread, I dug out my notes on the Farragut arms.

In the obituary for Admiral Farragut in Appleton’s Journal, 17 September 1870, is a description of Farragut’s visit to Minorca (not, as I said before, Mallorca) in December 1867:

Quote:

While at Ciudedela [sic], the old capital, and his father’s birthplace, he was presented with a history of his family and his coat-of-arms—the golden horseshoe with a nail of the same material.

Foxhall Alexander Parker’s The Battle of Mobile Bay (1878) quotes a 13th century Aragonese trova by Mossen Jaime Febrer about the admiral’s ancestor Pere Ferragut:  Sobre camp bermell una ferradura/De finisim or, ab un clau durat/Pere Ferragut pinta, é en tal figura/Esplicà lo agnom.

Parker translates this somewhat loosely as, "Peter Ferragut, in order that all might know his agnomen, painted upon the vermilion of his shield a golden nail and horseshoe."

According to his son Loyall Farragut’s Life of David Glasgow Farragut (1879), the admiral owned a copy of Febrer’s trovas and that:

Quote:

Several escutcheons belonging to the family, all containing the distinguishing horseshoe, have the addition of ecclesiastical and military emblems, showing that there were descendants of Pedro in the various professions.  The admiral adopted this device for the adornment of his plate, as a mere fancy.  The simplicity of his life attests too well that it was far from his desire to be pretentious…

The book illustrates the arms of Pere Ferragut with the horseshoe heels down and the nail palewise in base, which is the inverse of the way I’ve seen them attributed to the admiral.

Loyall Farragut himself used a bookplate that is listed in Bolton, with a shield Per saltire Argent and Gules, two horseshoes in pale and two six-pointed stars in fess all counterchanged.

Interesting in that it says all the shields had a distinguishing horseshoe when the info I posted in Foreign Arms for Ferragut of Barcelona did not have any horseshoe.

A little more digging turned up this on the website http://www.jhbayo.com/farragut/p13.htm, a page entitled "Los Farragut en Menorca."

http://www.jhbayo.com/farragut/fotos/2/escudo ferragut.jpg

It is captioned "Representation of the shield of arms used by the first Ferragut [who] arrived in the Balearic Islands.  XIII century."

The page also has an image of the badge of one of the several USN ships named after Farragut:
