Looking at pictures of medieval tabards in the Oxford Guide to Heraldry, it struck me that it might be fun to draw imaginary tabards of US official arms. So herewith the fictional tabards of

Eagle King of Arms:

and Nutmeg Herald:

More to come.

Bravo, dear Joseph, it is really nice! A handsome idea, and the tabards look convincing (for the US one could try another form of the tabards, closer to those of the British officers of arms, but this is not a must)...

- but why "Eagle King of Arms" - not "Presiding Supreme Herald of Arms"? :D

IMHO if you permit an ultramarine to make a further suggestion, Eagle’s tabard looks incomplete without an exceptional headgear (either having the shape of the eagle’s head, or, more formally, evoking the constellation crest of the US). And what about a staff of office and a neck badge?

I’m rather fond of calling the King of Arms by a place name. How about Columbia (as in District of…) King of Arms or Washington King of Arms?

Since we’re a republic, how about taking Michael’s suggestion and calling them "Governors". So, the primary could be "Washington Governor of Arms"

Anchor Herald (or Hope Herald, or Goldanchor, or whatever):

Whatever Herald of Arms? Great! I would love to be a Whatever.

Dear Father, I believe that we may call them by they office names irrespectively of the titles, be they First Heralds, Presiding Officers, Governors, Chiefs, Caciques, Kings or Nizams. Indeed it would matter more that the main herald is an Eagle and not a Turkey than that he is a King, or a Protector, or ~ ~

Meanwhile (a silly ultramarine suggestion) what about including conventional characters (localities incarnated) in such tabards into local festival processions? just as a funny seed for the more serious tradition to grow from? The heralds of old also started as minstrels wink
