Does anyone know where I can view a good copy of the Roll of arms created from the arms of attendees at the International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences, 2002 in Dublin. In the photos on The Heraldry Society of Scotland’s website I can not read most names and info and some charges are to small to identify. There are a few good pics but not of the whole thing.  I believe this Roll was created by the hosts. smile

I was able to get some photographs of it, both overall and of sections of it, when it was displayed during the Congress held at St. Andrews.  I’ll see if I can upload them to my website this weekend and then post the links here.

Many thanks for posting this roll David. Very interesting indeed.

Can you give me details as to how the roll was formulated? Did one submit arms for inclusion? Was there an artists fee involved? Were the arms checked for authenticity etc?

Regards ....................  Peter

You all are most welcome!  Heck, what’s the fun of heraldry if you can’t share it?

They asked the attendees to give them a picture or at least a blazon of their arms for inclusion in the roll.  If you did that, your arms were included; if you didn’t, obviously, they couldn’t be included on the roll.

As this was a project of the Office of the Chief Herald (the organizers of the Congress), no fees were involved (aside from the fees to register for and attend the Congress!).

To the best of my knowledge, no verification was made that the arms were authentic, etc.  I know for a fact that at least two of the arms included on the roll were self-assumed—mine (though I had been thinking about assuming this coat for a while, and had done a lot of research to confirm that they were not identical to anyone else’s anywhere that I could find) and my wife’s.  I’m pretty sure that there are other self-assumed arms on the roll, but have no specific information to that effect.

I can verify that there are several assumed arms in that roll, which of course is quite natural, as that is how you get arms in the German-Scandinavian areas…

Most of the Nordic delegates arms are assumed by the armiger, and not granted by a foreign power.

Interesting that the arms of the Heraldry Society of Scotland are labeled "Leslie Hodgson!"

Looking at the pictures on the HSS web site I noticed that.

I also noticed the resemblance between my arms and the arms of Maria Loredana Pinotti. I cannot tell from the pictures if her arms include a Oak Tree or not. Whatever kind of tree it is it is ( Azure an _____ Tree eradicated Argent fructed Or ) I couldn’t find a reference on line.  She seems to be the head of some European archive.

This is definitely a very interesting roll. Thanks again David! smile

Without looking, I’d guess that Ms. Pinotti’s arms have a pine tree.

Looking at it in that light, you may be right.

I think that the arms of Herve Baron Pinoteau (pic 7) are incorrect because the sword in the canton is Or, it should be Argent as a Napoleonic millitary Baron.
