i like that the US Coast Guard, the oft maligned/mocked branch of the Armed Services, has better heraldry—on the whole—than the US Air Force.

Yes, but it should also be remembered that the USCG has great many non-heraldic insignia.

Who has been maligning and mocking the Coast Guard?

sorry, not on here, but my two marines, and one army, air force and navy family members. not to mention my friends and fraternity brothers who’ve served. i’ve yet to meet one who thinks they are anything other than glorified search and rescue. now, i don’t hold that view, but that’s the view of my family and friends who’ve served. i meant them, not people here at AHS. sorry.

Interesting. Most of my Navy colleagues have nothing but the highest regard for the Coast Guard. Not only are they on what amount to perennial real-world operations with SAR, fishery protection, counternarcotics, etc.; they’re also out forward deployed doing maritime interdiction, serving as boarding officers aboard Navy ships (a dicy business going on an unfriendly freighter), counterpiracy, etc. And their officers are as totally professional as you could ask.

Your friends are senior officers. Those guys at least pay lip service to the idea that inter-service rivalry is stupid.

At lower levels everybody gives everybody loads of crap. There are 150k Marines, 500k airmen, etc. badmouthing you as glorified law enforcement and only 40k coasties to counter it.
