RE: What about Phoenix Arizona?

The chief Azure a saltire Argent is certainly appropriate but by now "well-used" -( which hopefully sounds better than "trite").

How about (metal) a phoenix (pick your color) within a bordure Azure charged with a saltire Argent throughout?  (i.e. blue border with just the ends of the saltire showing in the four corners)

With President Kennedy’s arms, the heralds decided to allude to the ermine a saltire gules of the FitzGeralds by dividing the bordure per saltire ermine and gules.  If the saltire is lost in the bordure.

A border per saltire would be another alternative, though I think the saltire throughout would be a more obvious allusion.
