I have been asked to try and identify these Arms

which are on a silver-gilt tea/ coffee service made by Edward Farrell in London in c.1818.

I make it out to be Argent 3 bars Azure and overall 6 escutcheons .... 3, 2, 1 charged with ?

It appears to be the coronet of an UK Marquess, and if so my best guess is a badly drawn Cecil set of Arms for the Marquess of Exeter.

I have trouble reconciling Three bars Argent and Azure…. with the accepted Cecil arms Barry of ten Argent and Azure….  Unless the coronet is Dutch/Belgium?

Any advance on this?

Don’t think it is a Dutch or Belgium crown because there is an ermine stripe on the bottom of the crown. Dutch or Belgium crowns usually do not have that.

Thanks Ton, I was grasping at straws there anyway. I think it is meant to be Cecil but I’m having trouble with it.

OK, I have resolved my issue with the interpretation of the Cecil Arms, checking Fox-Davies Armorial Families 1929 gives this image

and I can see how that type of image could be transfered into what is on the silver. It would be easy to take a black and white drawing like this and with the escutcheons think it was three bars azure.

So I’m happy these are the Arms of Brownlow Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Exeter, KG PC
