I’ve been puttering around with the design for my arms and need a bit of help.
How would one blazon a chevron/chevronel where the uppermost edge is engrailed, but the lowermost edge is straight? I’m trying to play on the notion of trans-oceanic emigration (the engrailed upper edge looks a bit like waves), but don’t particularly like the "wavy crested" option.
I’ve seen this done on a cotised chevron, where only the upper edge of the top cotise and the bottom edge of the lower cotise are engrailed, but can’t seem to figure out how to blazon it.
Here’s what I mean:

Thanks for taking your time to assist.
Cordially,
David
I imagine you would simply blazon it as Or two Chevronnels each engrailed on the upper edge Gules....
These arms granted by the College of Arms in 1969 have a similar treatment on the bars:

Azure, on three Bars each engrailed on the upper edge Or nine Gunstones, in chief a Cannon dismounted fesswise between two Rams’ heads caboshed Or.
Kenneth,
Thanks. I guess I thought it would be more complicated than that…;)

I wasn’t sure whether I liked the idea or not, but I think it’s simply that I prefer fewer "teeth" on the engrailment. And in the absence of modeling, my eyes kept putting the wrong things on top. Stupid eyes. This is pretty nice, though.

Very nice! Thanks for the mock-up. I have got to figure out this whole vector graphics thing!
I’ve been thinking quite a bit about going with a gold/red design. Both or/gules and argent/gules are used in recorded Pope arms. I find myself being drawn to the gold/red based on my Marine service.

Shouldn’t that be more like this (tincture violation notwithstanding)?

I’d like to see Gules with Or charges. The USMC Flag is mostly Red.
I think Kenneth is thinking in terms of uniform appearance.

Uh oh. Now I’m suddenly seeing a pair of crossed rifles in base and imagining these as the arms of a former USMC corporal who’s gone to work for Shell Oil.

Kathy,
Good point, but I’m trying to maintain similarity to previous Pope arms. Plus, Gules with Or chevrons gets really close to other recorded arms. The Marine Corps colors were determined at the time of General Lejeune, via the order below.
Title: Establishing the Marine Corps Colors
Category: Marine Corps Order No. 4 (Series 1925)
Author/Presenter: Major General John A Lejeune, USMC
Commandant of the Marine Corps
Date: 18 April 1925
1. Gold and scarlet are designated as the official colors of the U.S. Marine Corps.
2. In deciding on these colors historical reasons have been the guiding consideration, as during the early periods they appeared on the uniforms of officers and men and have since been used most consistently.
3. All guidons, banners, athletic ribbons, pennants, and other articles ordinarily designed to represent the Marine Corps colors, will be made accordingly.
4. Articles in Marine Corps colors carried by post exchanges will conform to the designated colors, the gold approximating as nearly as possible that in the regulation noncommissioned officers’ chevrons.
JOHN A. LEJEUNE,
Major General Commandant

Not trying to get too "Lucky Charms" here, just thought that it would be neat if my "livery colors" necktie was also my "Marine" tie…
"Now, young Skywalker, witness the power of this FULLY OPERATIONAL" two cents! ...Personally I like the Or charges on Gules field. :wookie:
(sorry, needed an excuse to use the wookie icon)

Except that your Marine tie would be green with red and yellow stripes:

A mere $95 from the egregiously overpriced Ben Silver Co.
Actually, I like the look of the design, although I don’t automatically register "trans-Atlantic" from an engrailed chevron somehow.

Great tie. I’ve managed to get my mitts on two of them, thanks to Ebay (where I DIDN’T pay $95!). Unfortunately, like the Leatherneck tartan, it’s not official in any way. I’ve been hoping the Marine Corps Association will adopt it.
I still sort of like the bold gold/red stripe here:

Yeah, perhaps wishful thinking on my part to explain a necessary differencing…

Come on, You can spring for a new tie!

I just saw the tie and couldn’t resist. But I never actually thought of that when I saw your design (which I really like).
