Only if he was a male-line descendant of whatever Nixon recorded the arms in Ulster Office.

Anyone recognize the artist’s "mark" near the upper part of the mantling on the right?

Wow!  Thanks for sharing.  I never heard of Nixon being armigerous.  Joseph, I’d love to hear the story….  Hint hint (I’d love to read a new entry on our series of armigerous presidents).

I recognise the artist, but, can not yet identify him/her.

However, I am pretty sure that the arms will have nothing to do with President Nixon as the artist practiced at the beginning of the 20th / end of the 19th century.

The artist is certainly turn of the 19th/20th century as their work appears quite a lot in the 6th (IIRC 1910) edition of Fox-Davies "Armorial Families".

There’s a look of Graham Johnston about the image, but I’m not sure, its maybe freer than his usual style.

Interestingly, the image is watermarked ‘Chicago Tribune’.

Didn’t the short-lived American College of Heraldry & Arms (a private

organisation) design arms for President Nixon and Vice-President Agnew

in the early 1970s?  They’d designed arms for Lyndon Johnson a few

years earlier.

Yes, they did.  I’ve seen a blazon for Agnew’s but haven’t been able to find one for Nixon.

The arms shown are listed in Armorial Families (6th Edition, 1910) as recorded in Ulster Office (no date given).

At the time of publication the family (in summary) consisted of the sons of the late Brinsley de Courcy Nixon (1825-190?) and his second wife and of late Rev. Eckersall Nixon, Rector of Ettagh and Canon of Killaloe (whose sons bore the surname Eckersall-Nixon).

The artist whom I thought did illustrations for Armorial Families *was* Graham Johnston, but the cypher is not his. He tended to use an ornate G surmounted by a J. This sometimes appeared as-is, sometimes in a shield and sometimes in a crowned shield. When in a crowned shield the work is much more academic, so possibly they represent arms done in an "official" style. He was Herald Painter at Lyon Court. Examples of his work can be found in Fox-Davies "Art of Heraldry" and is all over Armorial Families.

The Nixon arms are, however, very much in his manner, but seem less competent. The torse and helm are good examples of what I mean. The rows of little c shapes defining the mantling are very typical of his work in this style, but the use of solid colour in the mantling is not. A copy, maybe even from a tracing?

Assuming this item was from Pres Nixon’s estate, and absent any documented descent from the same family as the arms, looks like he or someone in his family was given or sold what would amount to bucket shop "arms of the name."
