From the Annual Report, 2010:
Quote:

Prior A. Marshall Acuff Jr. has appointed John McConville Shannon, CStJ, as the Priory’s first Genealogist.  The Executive Director of St. George’s Society in New York, Mr. Shannon has been President since 2002 of the College of Arms Foundation, which promotes knowledge and appreciation of heraldry and has close links to history - and heraldic-related groups in the U.S.

The Genealogist is the Priory’s technical adviser on genealogical and heraldic matters, and will investigate and report upon the armorial and genealogical proofs of Members referred to him.  He will also be a liaison between the Priory and the Order’s Genealogist and the College of Arms in London.  His mandate is to educate Confrères around the country on the uses and history of heraldry.  He says, "I hope to illustrate how heraldry, the origins of which date from the time of the First Crusade, is a visual and artistic heritage of chivalry that all Confrères can enjoy."

Neat. Do we connect at all with the College of Arms Foundation in New York?

There is no formal connection between the AHS and the COAF, if that is what you are asking.

However, there is a great deal of informal networking in the little world of heraldry, and many people here are also members, or leaders, of many other organizations.

My perception is that the COAF is coming from a very different place than the AHS, in terms of what it would acknowledge as legitimate heraldry, but perhaps I’m wrong about that. The literature on their website is understandably Anglocentric.

Fred,

Although the College of Arms Foundation was originally established in order to raise funds to assist in the upkeep and renovation of the College’s building in the City of London in the early 1980’s, some ten years ago the emphasis of the foundation’s focus was altered to allow it to promote knowledge of, and interest in, English heraldry in the United States.  Naturally enough there is therefore a concomitant connection with English heraldry or heraldry that emanates from or is recorded at the College.  That being said, an examination of the lectures or talks given by the foundation as reported upon its website shows it to be a broad church from an heraldic point of view.

With every good wish

John
